What do you drink, and how do you drink it?

Bourbons available in England?

Post by nerdybrewer »

I've been talking with some British friends and what they know of American Whiskey is JD, Jim Beam and Southern Comfort.
I told them that's the equivalent to us only being able to get Scorsby's, Clan MacGregors and Cutty Sark.
Can they not get decent American Whiskey over there or is it a case of just not knowing what to ask for?

Similar situation in Australia, you can find a better range in specialist stores but the average bottleo has a pretty morbid selection of bottom shelf crap and a bunch of even worse stuff bought in bulk and labeled just for the Aust/NZ market. Some of this disasterous swill is bottled in the UK as is evident by their hilarious surgeon general warnings

Best bet is to send them to a whiskey bar, they would carry a good selection.
That way they can figure out what the like and go in to a specialist off-license to get what they like.

My Oldest Son used to make several trips to Japan. He always took a metal suitcase full of Blanton's and Woodford Reserve to his Japanese friends there. He was a popular guy!
I think it was available there but very expensive.

Well I've shared a few names with them like Buffalo Trace, Angels Envy, Eagle Rare, W. L. Weller (Old Weller Antique one of my favorites), Blanton's.
I also sent them links to the Buffalo Trace distillery web page where they list all the Bourbons made there and a link to the Whiskey Exchange, I have purchased Scotch mail order through them, they should be able to get Bourbon that way as the site is based in England.
