A couple faves.
The one on the right is a $1 glass I got at the Dollar Store.
The one on the left (and I shizz you not) is one of a six pack that came from Costco with tiramisu innit.

Thats pretty much where I am now. I havent found a downside to them yet other than having to refill often.
Re: The right glass for fine whisk(e)y?
The downside to a jar or open top high ball glass is that it's not good for nosing as it's the wrong shape and your hand surrounds the liquor in the glass while drinking which warms the whiskey which is undesirable as well.

Cayars, there's a little tongue in cheek to the mason jar suggestion. You're on a site dedicated to the appreciation of fine whiskey, after all. Most know the sell on whiskey glasses. The point of the jars is *&$# it... purpose over poise. I have several glencairn glasses and appreciate the nose on them. But everyday when I get home from my 12 hour day, I walk over and grab the thickest, heaviest rocks glass I have, becuase it feels good in my hand. And if I'm tired, I, too, will just proof into a jelly jar and drink right from it. Cause if i pass out, i don't want to waste the drink (whether that be from spilling over, or most likely, evaporation over night).

yes i think its to do with the shape of the glass just more of a nose hit than a wide mouth glass

Glencairn for me. I drink most everything neat.
I don't drink alcohol, I drink distilled spirits.
Therefore I'm not a alcoholic, I'm spiritual.

I got a “six pack” of Glencairn glasses for Christmas. They really add to the presentation of a nice whiskey. And neat.

If the whisk(e)y’s fine my glass is empty and it’s only got one hole in the top.
Is there a glass that doesn’t behave like that???

I like my Glencairn glasses, but my "dirty daily" glass as the wife calls it, is actually a glass from a JD Christmas box set, unless I'm making an old fashioned. I usually only pour about 2 to 3 ounces at a time so this 6 ounce glass is perfect. And it's easy to hold.

As a person who did not know that whiskey was not just a single thing and could have a variety of expressions until my 30s, I was invited to a coworker's house for dinner. When her boyfriend brought out a bottle of eagle rare reserve, I did what you did with whiskey, grabbed the bottle, took the cork out and started to take a swig... apparently it should go in special glasses I learned. I thought you just passed the bottle 'round the fire. (Sigh)
Found this canoeing. Whatever made it black (like my soul) removed the metallic taste that comes with metal cups. Works good with wine too 'cause I can drink like 6 cups and it = like 2 glasses....

I think it's interesting there is so much aversion to "warming" your whiskey with your hands.
As the temp comes up, the flavor and aromas change, it gives you a wider range of flavors through the drink. It will intensify certain flavors. If you are drinking something of good quality this ought to be embraced. It's the same as adding a few drops of water as you work through a glass, it changes the adventure. This is really common in the red wine world.
If you are drinking Cutty Sark on the other hand, ice that junk down and subdue as much of the flavor as possible, then get it down your gullet at top speed!
I like Snifters and Glencairn.

I agree with the comments on presentation but at my age the taste is the same.
