small scale ethanol from waste.

Post by imakebiodiesel »

Ive been making biodiesel for about 3 years now and Im very happy with it. I use a small reflux still (15 litre) to recover methanol from my glycerol byproduct so Im fairly up to speed on distilling. I finish my methanol with 3A molecular sieve and regenerate it in vented steel boxes in my workshop stove. As a heat source I burn yellow grease in my stove. Yellow grease is the mixture of veg oil and animal fat that is too thick to make biodiesel out of and I can get all I want of it. I have just completed a larger still (100 litre) which will run on the same free heat source.
Im looking into the feasibility of using the still to produce ethanol for a second car, I would need 40 litres a week to run a small hatchback. Ive done a little checking locally to see what waste products might be available. . A cheese maker a few miles from me will deliver 500litres of whey,5% lactose, to me every week. A factory making french fries would pay me to haul away nearly half a ton of potato skins every week. A local supermarket chain disposes of 200 pounds of stale bread every week. There seems to be a lot of potential feedstock around.
I have a big workshop attached to my home where I work most days so I can be keeping a eye on the fermenter, still etc while I work. I have plenty of space for storage, processing etc.
My problem is that I dont know much about the fermenting end of the operation, Im reading up on yeasts enzymes etc but would appreciate some help in that area. Are there any good books or online sources you could reccommend.
