3" Flute build

Post by Pooch »

Hey all. Just finished up making a pot still head for a couple friends and it kinda got me in build mode. Been sitting on a bunch of stuff salvaged from the scrap yard and it's time to do something with it. A friend of mine  has also been getting at me also. So after reading through the flute talk thread twice, whew, and linking to some of the build threads there, I think I'll give it a shot. Looking through all the parts it appears I have damn near everything I need for a build. So here it goes.
Here are a few pics to get started. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will this flute, haha. So bare with me on this one. I did get it moving in the right direction. Might as well post the pic of the pot heads for my friends.

Cut out a couple plates and turned them down on the drill press with a file. Soldered plates and tubes. Next I guess will be product condenser then water test both of them at the same time. Hopefully soldering the P.C. goes a little smoother than this one.

Coming along nicely Pooch. Looking real good. Are you going to make the plates removable?

Looks like you have the skills to make a nice looking bubbler Poochy, shame you didn't go the extra inch and build a four incher. I think you will tire of the slow output of a three fairly quickly.

Plates are going to remain stationary, build will remain one piece with no breaks.

Went with 3" being that I already have it. Scrapyard find. Was unable as of now to find a piece of 4". Could always be build number two after I learn how to drive this one

For $8.00 I ordered a tri-clamp for my keg connection that came with two ferrules and a gasket off eBay. Have wire to make flange but figured I'd give this a go. Tig welded right up with silicon bronze.

Went ahead and cut out 4 plates for tree. Damn drill press won't hold 1/16" bit so used the cordless. Not as bad as I thought it would be. Taped all 4 together, punched top plate and proceeded to drill. No lubricant, barely any trigger and moderate pressure. Three bits used, only broke one when I could tell it was getting worn by having to push a little harder. So I made sure to swap out the other one after about 30 or so more holes. Took about 12-15 seconds a hole. Was counting only to keep my head in the game. Theres 86 holes, but I have to ream the half inch hole out to 5/8. After that I'll add a couple more around it. Should end up with 90/92 total. Here they are.

Made a little more progress. Here's some random pics, everyone likes pics. I'm sure you seen them before in other builds. But browsing different pics of the same things is what has helped me out so far. Ended up shortening the vapor tubes in the shotgun by 3" so they will be recessed on each end so when I solder on end fittings I lessen the chance of screwing up the seal on the end plates. Probably not I problem but did it regardless. Decided on the suspended cups only to increase the hole count on the plates. Spacing is 4.25" on tree.

Spent some time in the garage and made some more progress. Both condensers are water tight  Saw was only 2.5" so a little filing to get a good fit on adapters. Yet to drill holes through. Slow and steady progress. Hoping not to miss a step somewhere.

Clean up and test fit everything. Have to wait on a 1 7/8 whole saw to cut glass. Can't find one locally. Next I guess is figure out how to run plumbing. Thinking all 1/2"copper. Kinda like that look I've seen without any plastic tubing.

Looking good Pooch..

Unfortunately, all the good work of cleaning it up will have to be re-done.. a well, good experience at cleaning

Unfortunately your right. Cleaned it up on the 8" wire wheel mostly to get out all the scratches and rough stuff. Should make the final clean that much easier. Removing the discoloration from final assembly I'll probably use the polishing wheel and a light copper polish. Make it shine properly.

Got some garage time in to work on my build. Built controller, welded a couple 2" ferrules in the keg, made a parrot and soldered up final assembly. Final step will be to install water lines and valves. Decided to just get glass from a local business and not get the hole saw. Now waiting on some cork for gaskets. Couple clamps should be here in a couple days and I believe that will be it, haha. Sure something else will come up.
The 220 running to my garage is only 20amp service 12/2 wire. Pulled out the wire from around the house and picked up 10/2. Need to reinstall that hopefully in next few days. Maybe by next weekend it will be ready for a cleaning run. Here's some pics.
