First step to making SPP

Post by Dantuss »

Followed Dads advice and studied all his pictures closely and got the following start of SSP.
Lots of grinding and testing but finally got something off it that resembles SPP. Wanted to make sure I could get a spindle that worked and something resembling SPP shape before I went ahead and bought some stainless mig wire. Next step is to get the wire and make some kinda contraption that automates twisting this stuff up. Not sure exactly how much I'll need as I havent built my column yet. Anyone know with a 2" column running SPP what the height below the CCVM "T" I'll need? Some one suggested anywhere between 36"-48" column height sound right? Does the width dimension of the SPP look correct for a 2" column? Depending on where I measure it its anywhere .27 - .32.

36" of 2" pipe needs about a quart jar full of packing. Doesn't really matter what form of packing, for the most part. Volume is volume. The better the packing ( spp, small lava rock) will take more to fill the quart jar than say traditional round marbles. Quart is a quart, give or take a handful.

This is about the best home made inline process I know of. Nothing beats sweeds machine though.

You're doin good. Tension changes will change the shape. I used PEX pipe and a vice with bolts to make a tension device, screws in wood will work!

Cut it into pieces about 1.5 times the diameter. I agree a quart is plenty. Remember every inch is a plate...24" is 24 plates and will make azeo easily.

Built a down and dirty machine, bought some .06mm 316 stainless mig wire and this is what I got immediately after turning the drill on at low speed medium tension!
I bought 3 X 6lbs rolls of the mig wire, not sure how much I'll need in total as it seems to take ALOT of wire to make just a little bit of this SPP.
This SPP looks like it measures out at 6mm across and the shape looks "cool" but not sure if it is fact the right shape/size for the 2" column Im planning to build.

Dad300, would this be something you would run in your 2" still or would you work on making a different shape/size? And if so what would you recommend for the column height from the ferrule @ keg to underside of 6" site glass? My SPP looks more like figure 1 from krells handbook?

That looks perfect for a 2" column. 30"-36" of SPP will be more than enough!

A quart weighs ~3.7 pounds. So, 18lbs will make almost 5 quarts. But there will be waste.

Don't make 5 quarts that size. You'll want a larger size when you move to a 3" column. HA!

I put a gallon of larger SPP in 24" of 4" column and it filled ~20"and makes azeo.

Remember that any of the shapes in Krell's charts are 3x-6x better HETP than SS Scrubbies. If you want to estimate the plates, use the home page calculator .1 reflux and double the column height. Hope that makes sense.

It's funny you ended up with 316 SS wire. Every time I went looking for wire 316 or 316L (high silicone) ended up being cheaper.
