WW1 ANZAC biscuit recipe- a Hundred years old

It is now a Hundred years since and both my Grandfathers were at Gallipoli. They were in the ANZAC's during WW1, although they didn't meet till after the war. The War Departments of Aussie and home put out a call to send a treat to the boys overseas. They recommended a biscuit that was easy to bake, not use up the ration-tickets and last the trip to Turkey. So Mum's, wives, and sweethearts all over New Zealand and Australia baked up this delicious treat to send them. The recipe has lasted in my family until now. As kids we grew up on these and love them!
The original ANZAC biscuit recipe
Ingredients
1 cup plain flour
1 cup rolled oats (regular oatmeal) uncooked
1 cup desiccated coconut
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 tbsp golden syrup
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tbsp boiling water
Method
Combine the flour (sifted), oats, coconut and sugar in a bowl.
Melt the butter and Golden Syrup in a saucepan over a low heat.
Mix the bicarbonate of soda with the water and add to the butter and Golden Syrup.
Pour the liquids into the dry ingredients and mix well.
Spread the mix into a buttered shallow baking tray.
Bake in a moderate oven, 180C / 350F, for 15-20 minutes.
Cool and cut into 2 inch squares.
Seal in airtight containers.
Tips for US
The American tablespoon is a little smaller than the Kiwi/Australian tablespoon, so be generous with your Golden Syrup and Water.
And never, ever call them cookies! Enjoy! By the way, the ANZAC's are the “Australia, New Zealand Army Corp”.

Well, whatever you call it, it sounds damned good. Might make up a batch in honor of the ANZAC. Memorial Day is coming up here in the US. What better way to honor the memory of those who served and gave it all during WWI.

Good stuff Bruce, been so long since I had these!!, gunna have to make a batch!. Anzacs and a glass of milk was the go when we got home from school as kids!.thanks for sharing the recipe!.

My Granny baked a batch of these every Saturday and on top of that if we were down the river she would go to the cliff top and yell "Coooo,eeee" ,we could hear here for a km away and would come running. It was many years latter I learnt that coo, ee was the enlistment columns of WWI's call to arms. Grandma is 98 and in s nursing home now, I was telling my girlfriend how good these biscuits were when they were still warm and bendy. Im visiting my Gran today by coinsidence

I grew up loving these and they are still a staple biscuit in our home
