Pickin a Chicken...... or a duck...

Post by ranger_ric »

Decisions Decisions Decisions.....
Been raisin All Natural, Organic, Non GMO, Gluten free, Sugar Free, FREE RANGING, No high fructose corn syrup birds for 8 months now....
ON a side note I told my wife, who wants these specialized birds that, I really wanted NO part in them and would rather traipse down to the Supermarket and buy them ready to cook.
Well my descendants (children) decided they wanted to cook a couple of the ducks for Christmas dinner... My wife has been losing sleep over which should give their lives for us to enjoy a feast. (remember I didnt want birds..) So she asks me which ones to off....

Decisions Decisions Decisions......

I dont care just kill the males because they dont lay eggs to go with my bacon... LOL

I heard a rumor that instead of wrapping the ducks in bacon (like you would do for dove or quail) you should wrap them in pasta to soak up the grease....

Rick I've never cooked a duck. But if I did I believe I would use a rack of somsorts to keep it outta the grease.

Kids decided this eh?

Have the kids off the drakes, the injured and the bad layers in that order. Make them pluck them.

Next year they will want meatloaf!

If you have to do it...don't pluck them, skin them. My wife does this. 10x easier...or depending on where you live, I can get them processed and ready to cook for $3usd a bird, but I have to take a minimum number in. Some places it is 3-12.

I have cleaned 1000 dove and probably 250 quail in my lifetime. (only 3 pheasant and 2 grouse).
Dad, I think you see my dilemma.. I didn't want birds crappin everywhere and spendin good money on non gmo, non soy, gluten free, free range bird feed... to get two duck eggs a day (which they lay any frickin where, it is like an easter egg hunt EVERY FRICKIN day to find the duck eggs..)
The wife ended up with 4 drakes and 2 hens. One of the hens paired up with a male pretty quickly but the other hen was pretty much raped repeatedly by the 3 remaining drakes... as the days grow shorter the rapes have definitely decreased.. add to this my wife seldom is outside to see the animalistic abuse of the females..
I cant wait to hold them grandbabies close and share some tickles and laughter to let them know I Love them...
Next year I hope it is a Turkey so I can have turkey sammiches for a week afterwards!!
Merry Christmas

Duck is great. There is a ton of ways to cook it. Duck nuggets, duck stew, roast duck ect ect.... Dependant on breed of duck and size I usually just breast them out and keep the heart liver and gizzard. And rape is the way most ducks reproduce, that's why the have a crazy shooting spiral penis.

If you can, ask an experienced chicken killer to break a ducks neck. They'll get a live, noisy, pissed off duck. Funny, in a sick way.
I do love (non seafood eating) duck.

Duck is one of my absolute favorite things. It always amazes me when people complain about duck being greasy, then rave about bacon. It's all in how you prepare it:

If its still alive when i get to it I just grab its head and give it a good yank to separate its spinal cord. Sometimes the head does come off but its still just as dead, just gotta put it in your pocket till you get back. If you cant tell by my avatars I love duck hunting.

I grilled duck once on my houseboat, and it made a huge mess on the flybridge. It took forever to get the drippings clean.

There is a time and place for everything and it was a friend that brought the duck.

That was a fun weekend besides the party clean up.

Not saying duck is gross (i like it) but I'll never cook one out on the water again. :lolno:

That's a very strange way to eat duck.
