Holey Dollar Rum

Postby HookLine » Thu Oct 22, 2009 2:33 am

Friend bought a bottle of Holey Dollar Rum. Expensive shit, made in Fiji, supposedly the best in the large booze shop. Certainly the most expensive at $70 a bottle.

Before I even tasted it I could tell what was wrong with it, and tasting just confirmed it.

Heads. And lots of 'em.

Could not drink more than 3-4 mouthfuls. Just tasted like paint stripper to me.

My friend said the same, and thinks he wasted his money. I agree. He does not know I still. But I am gonna take him some of mine and see what he thinks. (I won't tell him I made it until after he has tried it).

Apparently it won gold ('Best in Class') at the 2009 International Wine & Spirits Awards.

No wonder I only drank commercial vodka and gin before I started making my own spirits.

Only decent commercial rum I have tried so far is triple stilled Bundy. Actually quite nice and smooth.

So the obvious lesson is: Make your own. (But you all know that already. )

The old thought process of "if it gives you a headache the next day it must have been good"...

<drift>
As an aside, I watched an episode of Myth Busters last night where they compared the hangover from just drinking beer and drinking beer and hard liquor... Drinking just beer yielded more of a hangover, which I would blame on the additional adjuncts and CO2... Bring on the hard liquor...!!!

If i remember correctly when beer is fermenting there forms a chemical that makes your body excrete liquid.hens you pee a lot when drinking beer.
A spanish friend of mine always puts a pinch of salt in his beer to counteract it. I don't see the reason here in Iceland, it's not like its hot or anything.

I agree the only comercial rum I like is old new orleans and that just ok.

Why is it that even some of the best rums on the market tast like there over oaked and a little like lighter fluid?

Haven't decided yet. If he likes it then he gonna ask what brand it is. Got any suggestions?

Welcome to my world! When I just pour shots, they ask what it is, and when I give them some "big name", the next time they come by they ask why their "batch" wasn't as good as the ones I seem to get. Nobody knows what I do, but damn it's tough....

What I don't understand is the awards; who the hell hands those down? Do they award points for heads? I taste them in everything from high end whiskeys to high end rums, too. Guess if you spit it out, the hangover part is moot....

I gess if all you have to judge is garbage then garbage wins. I realy hate comercial rum if the general public knew what good rum is and it was avalible a lot more of it would be consumed.
