Where can I find safe cork to use?

Post by GuyFawkes »

I want to use cork as a gasket for a flange on my next still. Does anyone here know how to determine if cork is safe to use, or where I can find cork (online or in store) that is safe?

Help is much appreciated

Musical cork I believe is real cork. The fake stuff is usually called something like "cork rubber". I would say, if it as sold as an automotive cork, or cork gasket, it is deffinately not safe.
I can say that I could tell you by how it feels/looks, but that wont help. The 'cork rubber' or fake cork, has a rubbery texture/feel, where real cork is kind of dry, and less plyable.

Okay, thanks Mule

Yep, and thanks for that gem Samohon, I use one on my stripping still and it works great.

I'm just trying to get feelers out for all the different ideas, I don't have any personal experience with cork so I figure it's $20 well spent whether I learn the PTFE gasket is better or not. I'm a curious person, I like to try out all the different options just so down the line I can look back on what worked and what didn't.

Currently I'm trying different gaskets, I've used the typical flour paste, your PTFE, as well as some new ones like using lasagna noodles and cut tortillas. Cork is next on my checklist, but I may end up using it if I go to a larger column
