My computer is phucked

Post by NO1DLR »

I installed a second hand motherboard to my computer, and all was good for the first 3 days. I ran several benchmark tests, and it performed flawlessly under load. Then it started randomly turning itself off for no apparent reason. It will be working fine, then suddenly it's as if a ghost is in the room and hits the power button. I have tried taking a stick of RAM out, and switching the different RAM modules around, and the same problem happens. The problem appears whether I am using Linux or Windows, which are installed on separate HDs. So I'm thinking, either faulty MB or PSU?
Sometimes the computer will run for literally 1 second before turning off, other times 30 minutes before turning off, but usually only about 10 minutes.

First and easiest thing to check is the Power supply
Swap with another - 2 min job and see if the problem goes away

I'm having trouble finding a PSU to borrow off someone, seeing that I need a power outlet for PCI-E and SATA drives.

Are both your drives SATA ? if one is an IDE you can always try with a standard PSU and one drive. Try that configuration with the old PSU and if you still get the shutdown another standard PSU will quickly show up as OK or still faulty in which case its the MB and the ATX shut down causing the problem

Jeez DLR, your're always having trouble aren't you? It must be dreadfull for you living in such a complex world. For somebody using a computer that continually stops I really do admire your patience. You must get sick of restarting all the time to stay in here for the hours that you do.

I thought that you were going elsewhere according to your last post.
