Are any of you guys watching the moonshine special History C

Post by pistachio_nut »

hannel? It's pretty good so far. They showed a guy with an 800 gallon boiler running a still with a thumper... opsec... and went over the history of the Scotch/Irish shining away in Washington's time. Prohibition, poisoned alcohol, etc. There's another hour to run and I'm sure enjoying it.

The dude with the beard is not giving an accurate description of flavor profile in my view.

Makes it sound ultra harsh from begining to end. As if you gotta drink it straight away and thats the way it has to be if ya wanna properly drank some shine,,,,,,,,as I recall.

It's almost like they went to the big boys to get some background, and the big boys inserted that description (or someone did) in order to keep the masses scared about drankin some strickly stilled, high quality product. Then the irrisponsible milk jugs use.

Great show but man.

Does anyone know if there is a torrent for this? I've seen it come up on here a bunch of times, but don't have a TV. Would love to be able to see it though.

yeah, he's fillin up plastic milk jugs, with none other than: a garden hose. Just another bad stereotype, showin the big vats full of nasty mash, tellin folks "we find these things with dead rats floatin in them sometimes"

Bearded fellow with cool accent: " and here I have a bottle of white lightning. Notice the lightning bolt on the bottle. Dont ask me where I got it" 8)

I watched the last half of one of them, and the one after that, last night... They air almost every week around here and I watch them over and over again because, sad to say, those re-runs are the best thing on TV late at night and on weekends... I pretty much know them by heart so if I fall asleep for a few minutes I don't really miss a thing because I can remember what happened while I was snoozing...

They do tend to try to insinuate that moonshine is made by knuckle dragging neanderthal's who are using suspect materials, bad water, inferior ingredients, and allowing flies and maggots to be a regular additions to the mix... And then we get a wave of new members registering here, thanks to The History Channel...

Ole Dunder (and I recon maybe goose too?) may very well look like he steped out of a "moonshinner's quarterly" magazine centerfold. But he is far from neanderthal.

These fellers here are much more resourceful and lerned than some the more socially acceptable folks we see gummin up the works every where you fucking turn in every profession.

It goes both ways. There are some backwoods folks that could produce some shit that was taught to them by there father's father's father's father, and so on. And it will knock yer socks off. (in a good way) Then you got the others that TV would rather portray. Backyard, swill making hillbillies. Makin shit that would gag a maggot. Main ingrediants are dead rats, methanol, and fermaldahide. It was the same way back in prohibition. You had good shit, bad shit, and down right poisonous shit. All driven by money ofcourse. Unfortuately in all situations, its the bad stuff that draws all the attention. Just watch the fuckin news. :|

The stereotypes they created in their propaganda campaigns is a really tough thing to shake. Right about that time was when the magazines and pulp novels had full sway and the image stuck...and hard. Popular literature ( or waht passed for it ) was laden with this stuff.

Maybe someday it will go away. Here's hoping anyway.
