I dont know what was funnier, SP busting MCH's balls, or the signature you see directly below his needling. Me thinks that signature maybe is a friendly reminder to ones self?

Just got home from a few days in Canada to find 2 five gallon carboys left outside my door. I have no idea where they came from but they are very clean.

Not that it's a rare extraordinary find, but drove past a granite tabletop maker today. Popped in and asked if they do marble, too. They do. Asked if they have any thing they usually scrap. They did. Handed me this, didn't want anything for it. It's now in my rum ferment

Well I'll be, you can class up your fermenter and regulate pH all in one go.

Not distilling related, but I have to post. After taking up welding and going to school for it for a mid-life career change, the metallurgy class I took lead me into an interest for blacksmithing. Joined a local guild, and did some. So the search for an anvil first (while going out and banging some hot steel at one of the members forge's and learning). Finally found one this week. The same member posted to our group he was at a yard sale, and the guy had a bunch of anvils. So we arranged to go see him together. 4 anvils in total. We got them all for $1300 Cdn. And then decided on what each was worth. I only brought 450 with me, and the best condition one we decided was $500. So next was mine for $400. 124lb. Ok, that's fair. Then I get to researching it. A guy from England who knows a fair bit about anvils on a facebook group tells me about mine after posting a pic. I was able to make out "Brooks" on the stamp. He informs me that it is a John Brooks. Now one of the other guys got a "Hercules", which is a Hay Budden, and one of the more sought after. I was still happy with mine, it is in decent condition. Well, I was told that mine was not the John Brooks that most would be familiar with. The one I obtained was made prior to 1880. Let me tell you, the rebound is fantastic. The ring is so nice. I ended up getting the "cherry" of the bunch and we didn't know it. The guy we bought them from (he is a German immigrant, in his late 70's), is a papered blacksmith from Germany as was his father. We also bought 4 leg vice's from him, one of our guys got a 6" Hay budden vice in mint condition for $300. I'm not sure of mine, but it's a 5 1/2 I got for $250 (one of our members leant me a few bucks since I didn't bring more cash). This guy also had some old casks with wooden spigots, old copper wash bins, you name it, he had it. And told us come out any time. He was a great conversationalist as well, talking of all this antique stuff. I'll be heading back out to him, and think I'll bring him a quart of my best just as a "thanks" and show of appreciation. He even invited us into his house and showed his special collection of antique tools (and one of our members purchased a wood level with brass trim all around). Just had to share this great find and experience.

Anyways, here is the steal of a deal anvil. If it could talk . . . pre-1880 . . . imagine what it's been used for (and it will still be used but not abused).

My best friend is partners in a winery up in gold country, CA. He's building a outdoor rolling tasting bar to be used when the weather is nice. It's built with used wine barrels. He gave me this box of cutoffs. About 30lbs. The shortest pieces are about 4" long, and the longest around 10". I'll cut them into staves, toast and char. Should keep me in oak for the next couple of years. :D

People usually leave crap - old couches, desks, and a lot of other crap in my parking lot, today I found about a 50' spool of 3/4" soft copper tubing sitting against the fence- thought about leaving a small bottle in case the copper god returned :)
