Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
When I told my wife I will do anything I want when I want, she left me and the kids. So when the kids grew up, I started stilling. No more problems here. I do what I want when I want and my grown up kids think the Old Man lost his rocker. I like it this way!!
A.D.D. and HD don't go together. This hobby takes time and dedication to learn and do it right and safe.

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
I never had a problem as my wife grew up with her Dad stilling in the basement. All she said was not in the house cause it makes it stink for days. So I started in the garage with propane last spring. Then it started getting cold outside this fall. I now still in the basement with electricity and she hasn't said anything about it. Of course my still doesn't stink up the house like her Dad's used to. She asks me when my next run is gonna be so she can get the laundry done before I steal the dryer plug

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
My wife was icy cold for about 10 days after I told her I had placed an order for a still, but then got over it. Or so I thought. She's back on me about it again, not sure what set her off. The still hasn't come in yet, so I can't win her over with Likker yet. I'm making up a batch of Apple Pie ala mode (from several recipes on this forum - EverClear 151) to see if that will get her interested. If not, I'll try the strawberry panty dropper. If that don't work I'll try black raspberry something... her favorite. I tried bribing her out of it with a couple nice pieces of jewelry. Apparently women of principle can't be bribed, or I haven't hit her price point yet.
Stay tuned... I'll post something clever in my signature at any moment.

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
My wife and I are two of a kind. We both like doing the same things no matter what it is. Fishing ... she goes with me and loves it. Shooting .... she asks me to buy HER guns. This hobby is no different. I will say that she doesn't like bullet casting too much, but that's no big deal.
Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
It's called WAF (Wife Approval Factor). I't done in points...negative/posititve. What you aim for it to try and keep it balanced (at zero). Things like using your gear to help make her something she likes to drink, help add points. Things like converting her best stock pot or cooler to a mashtun....loose points. You get the idea.
I've run mine down low enough into the negative to be sleeping on the couch. But, if you asked my wife...after much experience...she'd MUCH prefer me just buy the damn part I need...rather than tearing up her shit trying to make one. She absolutely HATES shopping with me at Home Depot.

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
My (girl friend) because I don't have a wife, four was enough, went havers with me on my first still, then she sort of lost interest and I'm a bit on my own now but she will kick in on opperating expences because she likes to drink the stuff as much as I do.
Sometimes I wonder why is that Frisbee getting bigger......and then it hits me.

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
Well put. That's the key, much easier to keep her happy when she already tolerates your BS. The fermenting and stillin' probably doesn't seem like a big deal after some of the other stuff, like 6 seasons of motorcycle racing, 18 years of off-road motorcycles (and the associated injuries), a decade of NFL season tickets (we interrupt this marriage to bring you the football season!) and a few things that I don't care to mention here. The challenge now is to get her into likker (she's a wine and beer girl) and the still will become an enhancement for our marriage.found one that actually puts up with me for who I r

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
Not mad at all. I did sense the "what's he up to now" looks when she would walk past the computer while I was doing some initial research.
Otherwise this is just the latest and certainly not the last new adventure for me/us.
She claims I get that "happy" look on my face as I start talking about what I want to do next. I say she lives vicariously through me. Either way, she has put up with flight lessons,
diving lessons, fly fishing, hunting, Tae Kwon Do, and 5 (small) businesses each started from scratch.
Her only question was if we were going to have time to ride the Harley this summer. Damn I love this woman!

Good one LWTCS, The frisbee got pretty big, I do remember smartening up though, somewhere in my fourth marriage, I came to the realization that at that time I was just one divorce shy of enough, so I got one more and it's all good now

Mrs. E85's "you bought what!?" induced icy winter is starting to thaw. Here are the signs of spring:
- she now only refers to my new hobby as "the stupid still"... much shorter name than before.
- Served some "Apple Pie" from a recipe on this forum (Thanks guys) to guests on Friday night... Even though it was Everclear based, it was a big hit. Told her some day I'd make some way better.
- Reverend is coming over tonight and she asked if I could break out another jar of the apple pie.
She'll be cracking rye and mashing corn before you know it!

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
Well, mine is a very long story. This may be a bit much but what the heck, you don’t know me. My wife is something of a rebel herself. She left her country with $80 dollars in her pocket, and no other means of support, to come to the US to study. I had been stillin for 8 years before I met my wife so I think she was perhaps intrigued by the notion of knowing/dating someone who makes his own moonshine. After we married, I happily continued my hobby for 10 years without a single complaint from my wife. She has always let me be me. Then our son, who was in second grade, began to have a lot of difficulty in school. They wanted to put him in some program. Given that news, I went out to do some stillin to clear my head and may be come up with some sort of plan. About an hour into it my wife came out, just looked at me and said “your son needs you, you have to help him”. There was no discussion, she just went back inside. I didn’t ask if she just meant just for now, I just went and got my 5 pounder and demolished my setup till it was unrecognizable. My son never went back to that school again. We home schooled him for all of 3 rd grade, and by “we” I mean both of us. After 3 rd grade he was caught up enough to gain admission to an excellent private Catholic school. My son is now in his junior year in college and has made the Dean’s list.
My wife and I never spoke about that day I destroyed my still. But about a year ago I found her snooping on my smart phone. Apparently, she was looking at the internet history to see what sites I visit. Then she just looked at me and said “I think you should go and get yourself a still, something real pretty”. The only surfing I do on my phone is reading about all the epic success and failures hear on HD. Now I got a real nice setup, all electric, 26 gallon SS milk can. I keep a 42” flat screen and a couch in my garage so we can hang out together when I’m stillin. My wife wants me to build a still head into a lamp that attaches to the boiler so we can keep it in the living room when it is not being used for other activities. So to answer the question… I think she’s OK with it.

That's a great story, when I am in the shed all day stillin my wife calls me on the cell phone from the house and asks if she can bring me anything to eat. She doesn't spend the day with me but she does check up on me now and then.

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
My wife's the best and very supporting, I asked if I could turn the basement into a workshop, "no problem" let me turn the spare room into a sports room. " no problem" she's a huge sports fan anyway, I want to dumb 15g's into the car " fine as long as you get most of it back when you sell it" I want to start making my own booze " that's a great idea". Lol lets have 3 kids in 2 years. " sure why not " haha I live the good life

@MitchyBourbon
great story...i think i am going to cry...ok all better now,
the first time i brought my girl friend home to meet ma and pa (over 20 years ago)
we had to go to the hill because the old boy was cooking up some shine,
they met, everything was great, untill the next mourning,
girl friend woke up before i did, about 2 hours,
old boy was an early riser,
by the time i woke up and made my way in to the kitchen i was in for a surprise,
old boy like to start his drink'n earlier,
and off course he asked my girl friend if she wanted a shot,
she said sure why not, she did not want to be rude with the first time meeting the parents,
so when i got to the kitchen she was tanked and it was around 10 in the morning,
i said what are you doing?
she said your dad offered me a shot and then two and three etc,
i said, you can't drink with him, it will kill you trying to keep up to him,
i said to the old boy.. what the hell are you doing getting her drunk first thing in the morning?
he said, ... what? i asked her if she wanted a drink with me and she said yes,
i put her back to bed and he took off on his daily events,

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
Your father sounds like a real character. When I met my in laws face to face for the first time it was a week before my son was born. I was shit scared, we had just bought our first home and we were both unemployed. What was I gonna say? Hi, I'm your new son in law, here's my new house, you pregnant daughter and oh by the way we don't have jobs! And they were planning to stay to 6 months to help out with the baby. Mercifully, my wife's 4 year old niece broke the news to them before they arrived here. Needless to say I didn't mention my hobby
Well I suppose your expecting another happy ending, so I won't disappoint. My in laws are both physicists and live and breath everything technical. Where they are from people are extremely impressed with software engineers. Well that's just fine cuz that's what I am. They complete ignored the fact I had no job when they arrived and with in a week I was back to work. They know about my hobby now, the old man thinks pretty cool... My mother in law, not so much.

Wife is fine as long as I clean up the mess and replace repurposed kitchen equipment. As far as I can tell it doesn't seem any madder to her than my other mad scientist activities.
Dad is cool with it, he's an old chemist with lots of Eastern bloc contacts where it is part of the culture.
Ma in law is the other kind of cool. Her father was alcoholic.

I told my wife I was making her a B'day present and actually gave it to her. Then we had lessons on how to run it. She won't run it, but lets me.
Now she makes maceration's, helps blend, and her favorite, gin extracts.
Get her involved and unless she's a prohibitionist, she'll come around.

My wife loved when I started this hobby/obsession because it actually helped me drink less
However she doesn't like that the first questions her family asks when they stop by is "what u making now?" and "can we have some?"

Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
My wife was super cool with the idea. I have dedicated a spare room into a brew room (she helped me set it up). She bought the keg for me, she also bought my carboys for me. She is always askin if I need more sugar. She also wants me to experiment with different fruits. Lastly she loves to have some for her and her girlfriends to sip on, something sweet of course.
Chew on this: In 1920 During Prohibition, President Harding kept the White House well stocked with bootleg liquor.
Re: How mad was your wife when you bought/built your first s
Mine didn't have a problem with the still, she actually thought the idea was cool. But when I started fermenting 30 gal multiple gens of SF in the laundry room and stunk up half the house she didn't think that was cool at all. So now I ferment in the shed and she's all happy again!
