So, I've been getting sick and tired of the snow and ice, cold weather etc in Canada and will be retiring in a couple years. I've been looking at buying a place in Florida or new mexico, maybe Arizona, houses are cheap and most importantly lots of old rust free cars! Don't want to get political but with obama back in, it soured my outlook for the states and I started looking elsewhere.
So...Australia...hmm sounds good...don't like the fact though that it seems everything from spiders to plants to bicycles is poisonous and deadly...eehhh, not so good.
Then I thought about NZ! HEY, and I can distill LEGALLY TOO!! Wife said as long as we have a nice place/etc she'll be happy so I went looking online for realty prices...
So..is there anybody in NZ that can give me a hint as to where the cheapest place to buy or live is in NZ?? I've been looking at places starting at $150,000 for a lot and thinking..ah NO!
I'll be selling my house/cottage/other crap plus I have rrsp's etc, but STILL I don't want to pay more than $150,000 for a place with hopefully SOME property (a couple acres but the more the merrier)
Anybody from NZ want to chip in and point me in the right direction? I heard I can transfer to the NZ military for 3 years and then get my citizenship since we're both commonwealth nations..that's interesting too.
Thanks

Looking for somebody in NZ
Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

Anywhere more than an hours drive (at max 100kph) from the main centers, particularly Auckland and Wellington.
The further out you are the cheaper it is.
Can distill and grow your own baccy.
Only thing is limits on the types of firearms you can own.
Still; easy to get licensed and own std shottys and rifles (max mag 7 shots, for anything over .22 which is 15 shots) bolt action, leaver action, pump action, semi-auto only, no full auto w/out a special police endorsement. Same required for folding stocks, front grips short weapons etc. Also, hand guns next to impossible to own legally.

Where has all the rum gone? . . .

Thanks for the reply, I'm not too worried about firearms, don't even own a gun. Just curious on a starting point to start looking for a place. I'll go back and search again using your advice and see what I find.
Thanks

$150,000 CDN is about $180,000 NZD so your best bet is probably a smaller (<10,000) town.
What sort of climate are you after, and what do you enjoy doing? Might make it a little easier for one of us locals to suggest a rough area to look at

Re: Looking for somebody in NZ
climate could be the decider, NZ has the range, tropics to cold, west coasts very damp, east coasts hotter and dryer, house prices are cheaper in the rural districts and depressed areas, North Island has about 3+million peeps, south Island about 750,000.

Look in the Hawkes Bay if you're sick of the cold and snow. Lots of smaller towns with affordable 10 acre sections etc and nice weather. Best part of the country if you ask me (I grew up there so may be a little biased.. )
