About to pull double duty

Post by BoisBlancBoy »

Well just tapped about 55 maples trees and collected 15 gallons of sap today. In the next couple days I'll have enough sap to start boiling away and make enough syrup for the family this year. Also while sitting for hours in the garage watching the sap boil I've got it timed out right so I can do a fee stripping runs and a spirit run. So the next week or so I should be pretty busy!

Blows my Southern mind that you can stick a tap in a tree and get maple syrup. They ought to build a monument to the person who figured that one out.

I think the Native Americans figured it out, though I could be wrong.

But nothing better than some fresh maple syrup on a big bowl of vanilla ice cream!

You lucky dawg. I have to go down to the grocery store and pay like $8 for a itty bitty bottle of that stuff.

For sure the stuff isn't cheap! Understandable so when it takes anywhere from 30-40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup. I just changed over from a gas boiler to a nice little wood fired arch, which holds a 24"x36" flat pan.

Sounds fantantic! I'll have to figure out if he lives close or not, then pool resources lol.

What I like doing when the sap is getting close to syrup is throw a hot dog or brat in the pan! I'll tell you what, it comes out pretty darn good!

Looking to score 10-15 gals. of sap from the local sappers this year. Going to run my sapskey again with a few mods. Was very happy last year with the test run.

So far haven't done both at the same time, but I did boil 60 gallons of sap yesterday. Only took about 5 hours with the Half Pint. Minus what it took the fill the boiler up I figure I boiled about 10 gal an hour. I'm pretty happy with that.

The next time I boil I'll probably set the still up too if I have enough sap to boil. Cause I'm sure I'll have a longer spirit run that a maple run.

Back about 15 years ago when myself and family made it commercially we sold it for $30 a gallon. Since then prices have about doubled! We used to make, depending on the seasons run, anywhere from 700-1200 gallons a year.

The way the sap is flowing here this year I'll be happy to get 2 gallons of syrup. Spring went from a constant -20 to +40 at night and we need them freezing nights and warm days to get the maple blood flowing. Weatherman is calling for perfect conditions for next week, but how often is the weatherman right?? :(

Mine is aging on oak since last spring, not sure if I am that big of a fan. It definately has a different flavor than allgrain made with just water. Maybe I'll give it another year.
A.D.D. and HD don't go together. This hobby takes time and dedication to learn and do it right and safe.

We are going through a few nights of above freezing weather too, but is supposed to cool back down. So I'm hopeful our season has some time left.
