haha crazy bastard. sure why not, your fores cut off that run will prolly be 50% but hell I bet you get a nice heart cut of fruity deliciousness. All the fruity esters in a ferment come over early in a stillin run, so there's gold in them dregs mate.

Cant say I ever did a fores run, but used plenty of gallons to start the fire pit. Got me wonderin now, let us know how it goes.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Definitely wasn't serious there! Seems like it would be a sprit run with fores, heads, no heart, and no tails. Maybe could take the heads and add them to a feignts run!

I do alot of sending people here from still makers fb pages when they are making outrageous claims. The still builders don't appreciate it very much but hell... Its Facebook, block me. The one still company that don't get bothered at all is whiskeystillcompany, the owner, josh, goes out of his way to point people here to learn.

Cranky, did you get rid of all your slabs out of that log? Wouldn't be Saddle Mtn Wood....would it?
I picked up the wood from some guy in the dessert, Arizona, I think. I got it cheap but it was an amazing piece of multi colored wood, with just about every color imaginable. My plan was to slab it out and use it as an inlay for this

But I never managed to get it slabbed out and eventually sold the log to someone in Florida :( I did make a lot of money for it though :D

Petrified wood... :esurprised:
The important thing to remember is that if its still petrified after 4 hours you should seek medical attention.*

Sorry Cranky, but you knew the dangers of posting here...

Only reason I asked Cranky was I am an avid collector of Petrified wood. I have found and collected wood from all over the country and although I do have some saddle mtn wood. I always look for really nice specimens that I can polish up for my collection. Thanks for the reply and directing me back on topic in the right thread. Now everytime I see petrified wood it will remind me of Viagra...thanks to JBT.

Carry on

Re: Hijack my thread

Post by cranky »

For the past couple weeks I have been trying to get my yard cleaned up so the landscaper can get equipment in to build a retaining wall in order to expand my yard by at least 10 usable feet. Part of this cleanup entails moving my firewood pile from one area to another. As many of you know, last summer I was given about 2/3rds of a cord of my favorite kind of wood, that being wood someone else cut, split and delivered  On top of that it was cherry wood, which I was very happy to get and was thinking it would be a real shame for such nice cherry wood to be used just to keep my house warm. So I stacked the cherry wood to cure and figured I may try it for aging brandy in a couple years but in the mean time I have been using it for smoking meat. Some people told me they don't like smoking with cherry wood but this gives a real nice flavor, I've done a couple briskets now and man they are good!

Anyway, I have been moving this wood around and noticing what nice straight grained wood it is. I also started noticing how long some of these pieces are. My fireplace insert can only handle smaller logs, the best size is actually about 8-12 inches long so these are more than twice that long so they won't fit in my fireplace, Not that I'm complaining, after all as the old saying goes, never sniff a gift fish. Then it occurred to me that these logs were a little longer than the barrel I am currently aging apple brandy in :problem: Then it occurred to me again that these logs have some really nice straight grain and I started to think, Just how hard could it be to make a barrel out of this stuff?

Of course at the moment I don't have any time to work on such a project but in 2 years I may just need to think about doing that. I see that there are actually some companies making barrels out of cherry wood. I wonder what you guys think?

Wish I could get some of that. I have 2 chainsaws, but I'm an old fat guy and climbing up the hill to cut wood is a pain in the ass that I do a couple times a year. I guess that the old saying that wood heats you twice is true.

I have a heart problem that acts up when I get too much vibration. I have a chain saw but it is a safety saw so it don't do much good and the wife gets upset if I try to cut wood with a chain saw. Fortunately I have a pretty much unlimited supply of 4x4s that I get from my work so I cut those into 6" lengths with my miter saw and burn them. My fireplace insert is super efficient so one 10 ft long 4x4 will heat my house for an entire day and they are easy to deal with plus I use them for tons of other projects.

Three times if you put your woodpile far enough from the house...
Cranky, who makes barrels out of cherry wood? I want a 5 gallon. I wish you well trying to make one though, I suspect that the videos of people making one only look easy because the person in the video has done it for half their life.

Gave up burning wood as primary heat years ago. When oil spiked and the free wood went away, it became just as expensive. I burn wood pellets and corn now. I do keep a fee cord for the fireplace in case of emergencies.

Have 8 dead ash trees standing now and i cant hardly give them away. My woodsheds full.

This is one of them, at least it says the barrel is made from cherry wood.

When I was searching the other day I found a few more but can't seem to find any of them right now. I suspect the barrel makers make it look far easier than it is for someone like me but I think it might be a fun project to try to make if I ever get some free time  I might think about making apple press parts out of that wood as well. When the weather dries up I will probably rough cut those logs and get them where they can dry and see how it goes, I have kind of formulated a basic idea in my head and hopefully I can make that happen.
