other thing homade

Post by sdpoage »

I was just wondering what else people make other than spirits. I personally make laundry soap for the wife. Gets me off laundry duty, and is a hell of a lot cheaper. Also make toothpaste. Works so much better than store bought.
You know your an alcoholic when you have your own still, mash your own grain and distill your own likker, but you don't care!!! A.A. is for quitters.

The only laws worth breaking are the ones that don't make sense!

I'm a woodworker, so I make all sorts of stuff. Made a bunch of salt and pepper grinders yesterday, started working on a curly maple humidor today.

Trying to figure out how to make a grain mill, as I already made my own apple press. The grain mill is proving more difficult, and I'm having to call in my machinist father for help...but it will be great to have an electric grain mill finally!

make a hand cranked mill that you can atach a hand drill to.

I try to make/ build everything I have the tools and capabilities to.

I hope one day to move from a top floor flat to somewhere I can have a work shed.

I work in a machine and welding shop so I am constantly making new things from scratch. For myself , I make jams and jellies, I do all my own reloading, build my own fishing lures, build my arrows and bowstrings, does baking count? Breads cookies and cakes. Built my own smoker and make my own jerky. Always tinkering with something.

Sun's out, so I'm drying salt today.

My high fat Camembert is ready. Turned out really soft and buttery.

Waxed a tomato and herb Gouda.

Finished the stained glass panel and started another one.

I have to agree with Jedneck, Buying is a last resort. I was just thinking , my 7 year old grandson wanted a fixed gear track bike and I couldn't find one his size so I built him one.

Thanks! My father always told me if someone else can build something so can you. We are all just human. I have tinkered with so many things in my life , it is just my nature. If you could see inside my brain it would probably scare you with all the ideas running around in there. Some good some not so good, but they all help me learn. Now if I could just figure out these computers.

For me it's all about fermenting. That's what started me in this hobby in the first place.

Sauerkraut, kimchi, anything I can naturally pickle. Kombucha, keffir... The list goes on. Mostly from my garden if I can manage it.
I recently built a curing room in the basement for sausages. No smoker yet, but loving the science behind fermented sausages. Genoa and the like. Also comes in handy for the bresaola, lomo and prosciutto. I have a full prosciutto that's been hanging for 11 months. One more month should do it.

Just recently started winemaking after working for mission hill. A bit backwards but hey... I like it.

Tap. Out.

Same here. Going to start a batch of natto today, although I didn't actually grow the soy beans myself.

It's been about twelve years since I last ate bread that I didn't make myself and that was because I was moving cross country.

I make lots of stuff when I have the time, not saying I make it well but at least there is no one to blame but myself. I used to make all my own sour dough bread but the wife doesn't like sour dough so we started making our own home made regular breads, can't always find the time though but we try. Home made pizza on home made sour dough is the best. I'm going to make a new apple press soon, already made my own apple picking basket, I am on V3 of that and can reach 20FT which isn't near high enough so there will probably be a V4 in the future. I want to make my own hydrogen peroxide rocket bike but the wife says no. But there are lots of other things to keep me busy.

I make all kinds of stuff, from baking, to gardening/preserves/jerky etc.. have a woodworking background as well as coating specialist. For X-mas asked my son if he wanted me to restore the 1950's tank bike I found for free.. was happy to see his eyes light up and say "yes dad that would be awesome!"

Latest projects are: carpet mill for my dog, press for making infused oils, compressor made from old parts and an air con./dehumidifier compressor unit. In the works is a wood burning rocket mass stove for an RV van. Always have something going or waiting to be started...

MichiganCornhusker described me as being capable of making anything from Noah's ark to a spaceship . A bit too gracious on the top end , I think . Like others here ; if I can figure out how to make it , why would I buy it ?
>I have 7 grandkids . It is incumbent upon me to be able to show them those things that would fancy their young minds just as I did their parents . With that burden the learning , for me , never ceases .

That was what started me thinking about it. A hydrogen peroxide rocket isn't actually that difficult to build, it basically requires a tank to hold pressurized 75%+ peroxide, a hundred or so silver or silver plated stainless steel screens, a valve, a nozzle and a bit of plumbing. This website pretty much covers everything http://www.peroxidepropulsion.com/article/5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Someone with your fabricating abilities, corene1, would probably be able to make a rocket bike in a day or two. Me on the other hand would take a bit longer. I wouldn't want it to go an faster than 45 or so but that video shows the possibilities. I even came up with a great steampunk concept for it that I talked a little about on another thread but this is what I picture it looking like.

If I had more free time and a good shop I would be dangerous...um...er.
Just think how much fun grand kids would have on a rocket bike. :moresarcasm:

Love to cook and bake as well. My kids always get excited when I'm in the kitchen because it means something good.

I make my own ginger ale, ginger beer. I grow tomatoes in the summer and basil and rosemary all year. When my son finishes his masters I plan on turning part of the guest house into a green house. It was a detached garage I modified for.my wife's parents but they decided they didn't want to leave there friends.

Moose: Saukraut is really so simple. Slice the cabbage, mix 10 grams of non iodised salt per Kilogram of cabbage. Massage it in with ur hands, squeezing to break some cell walls. pop it in ur crock with a weight on top. wait approx 10 days at ambient room temp. Or ferment it cooler for longer.

A really good reference is a book calle "the art of fermentation" by Sandor Elix Katz. Tons of good stuff in there.

Hmm, where to start, dragsters, stock cars, mud trucks, dirt bikes/ pit bikes, three wheeler on and on. I have a lot of metal working stuff, tube benders/horizontal bandsaws stick and mig welders, torches on and on. I make my own bread, pastries, have a garden with lots in it. Converted a guitar into a 3 string slide guitar and now want to build one from scratch or maybe a resonator guitar. Do all plumbing/electrical/shingling/everything around a house. Have never hired anybody to ever do anything on the 9 houses I've had so far.

Starting to sound more like bragging then just saying what I can do/have done and that's not the intent.

I've turned a normal woman into a raving lunatic..no wait, this is supposed to be positive stuff huh? :shifty:
Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

There's lots of ways to skin this cat. I've had some that tastes and is made like beer with barley and ginger. I have two recipes I like and I am experimenting with a third.

The first is non-alcoholic, which makes it more of a ginger ale. You end up with a syrup that can be added to water or club soda . It is the best mixer I ever had with bourbon.

The second requires timing. You add enough sugar to ferment and provide sweetness. When you think it has reached the right abv you seal the container, after a day or two it has been carbonated and then you cold crash it in the fridge. I like mine pretty dry with an abv aroused 6%, but you can add.more sugar if you like it sweet.

My experiment. As I mentioned, my second recipe can be difficult to predict how much sugar to use, when to seal for carbonation, when to cold crash. So I thought I would use exactly the amour of sugar to achieve an abv of 6%. Let it ferment to an sg og 1.000. Add some pruning sugar for carbonation, add some unfermentable dextrin for sweetness and bottle. That way I can control everything, abv, carbonation and sweetness. I hope I don't sound like a control freak.
