A belated Father's Day gift
My wife gave me this today, it is supposedly from the late 1800s. It appears to be glass covered in whicker. I'm not sure if the cup is silver, tin or lead. It does not feel heavy enough to be lead, but it doesn't look like silver. It's not going to be used, just an interesting addition to my knick-knack shelf. The writing on the bottom of cup is very hard to read, it appears to say in a circle E.D8PB, lower half of circle has BREV.ETES S.G.D.G. With an accent over the E. Anybody have any ideas? It's pretty cool and like I say I'm not going to use it,just a cool piece!
If you wear underwear then it's a dress!

I didn't even think of pewter! I'm pretty sure that's what it is! Thanks rock!

Re: A belated Father's Day gift
BREV.ETES S.G.D.G. basically means patented in French, so it is a French flask and like Rock said the cup looks pewter to me too. Since it is not stamped "Made In France it most likely predates 1900, probably even earlier. The S.G.D.G. began being used in the late 1700s and Country of origin began being required late 1800. My guess is mid 1800s, 1860-1880. My wife puts it possibly as late as 1910 due to the threaded cap and missing the country of origin because it was never intended for export. It's a very nice piece Bigbob.

Re: A belated Father's Day gift
Pewter was my suggestion as it was so common in that time. But someone beat me to it, BigBob.

Pewter was my first thought as well...

That is very cool, a perfect gift. You need to get yourself a leather bandolero for that and strap it onto the kilt. Formidable.
Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me...

It might be silver plated white metal and not pewter, pretty common for the time period. White metal often looks like pewter when the silver plate wears off.

Would you like me to bring it up to proof cranky? I know you appreciate old items.

I would like to see it but I wouldn't want to risk it getting broken or damaged.Bigbob wrote:Would you like me to bring it up to proof cranky? I know you appreciate old items.

Have you seen how bag smashers handle luggage? If you think it will survive being it, but pack it well. I'm sure I am not the only one who would like to see it.Bigbob wrote:It's been around for 150+\- years, a weekend in Seattle will be ok
Re: A belated Father's Day gift
I'll wrap it in my kilt!
