chat room

Post by Uncle Jesse »

I've been thinking about reviving it lately, any thoughts?

I could set up ircd on the unix side or try something else, it's been a few years since I checked out what's available.

I think so too UJ.

We tried it before, but there wern't enough folks. The site is alot bigger now. On weekdays at lunch in North America we often have WAY more than a hundred folks lookin' at the site. I think there are enough folks now to have a chat room.

My only worry is folks won't be tight-lipped enough. A chat room could lead to folks findin' out who and where folks are and causin' trouble.

Could work. But Goose has a good point. Chat rooms tend to be a lot less restrained and considered than a forum format like this.

you could always just do a test chat room on yahoo or something like that. I think I would be interested if something was set up.

A chat room would be a great idea.

I'm not a fan of IRC, but I have seen some forums chat modules that you can use.

just not sure on the specific ones.

there is a PHBB chat module on the PHBB site. I use it it on a board I have...works well. Users must be registered and logged into the site. Anyone with Admin or Mod status on the boards has same staus in the chat module.

I'll look into it. The fun part of ircd was having the Shaney bot in there

It was the Mark V. Shaney program put into a bot. It would remember what people said and then try to formulate sentences based on what it had learned.

Yup, I too had that experience with that bot..
In retrospect it is funnier now than it was at that moment. LOL

But a chatroom, behind a login-procedure, looks nice to me.

Please do Jesse- I think a chat would be great!

Just my opinion, but there are chat rooms for WAY more illegal things than what we talk about here, and they don't lead to a bunch of people getting arrested.

Just putting in my vote for a chat, they are great for getting instantaneous answers while mashing or running the still.

The only thing I have against chat room and especially IRD is that there is usually no record of conversations unless you have local login turned on. The artifacts, that can be retrieved through "SEARCH" are what make the forum useful. I wish phpBB had as good a search feature as google's algorithm.

version 3 of phpbb has a newly revamped search feature. I'm not saying it's better, but I'm saying it's different. I haven't given it a try yet.

I'm working on this. I have installed the chat as instructed but I think I need to set up the Java Development Kit server side, so I'll do that soon.

My two cents. I like instant, I don't like loose lips. I think that if you want instant then just find out who is online at the moment and send them a PM. Chat would be awesome fun though when you can't find an answer in the forum. Just two cents from a new fella

I like forums.
I read pretty much every post on here (cept the argument on glycerine and liquers  ) and don't like the idea of the things being typed being lost.
I like the idea of being able to consider (even though i don't do it enough) what you're saying before hitting reply, and i like being able to modify or edit my comments.

I doubt i'd use it.

On the same note, if you post after a few too many sherberts.....it's always there. There are few things that I have said that I would like to take back

The edit buttons always there for that mate. I prefer to add another post with retraction/apology and leave the one i've fucked up in, but sometimes you just gotta take things down
