Solar Eclipse 08-21-17

Post by MoonBreath »

Drove thru town to Hardies today for a burger and seen folks standing on street corners handn out solar eclipse sunglasses.
County does that for us here, shite.
We got total coverage here tho ..News says to expect 20-50 thousand folks area wide, sob. :wtf:
Sayn it will be total blackout for 2-3 minutes..ISO 12312-2 approved glasses or #14 welders lens is the ticket.
Also says not to even look at it is the best thing.
I'm gettn old I guess, don't understand all the hoopla, I sure wouldn't drive cross country to see it.

I was in Kennewick ,Washington in February 26th 1978 for the last total eclipse threw the area. They are about as thrilling as a big ass cloud passing over.

Who knows it may be overcast here and be really lame. I just cant get excited over a shadow let alone travel.
Its going to be 96.9 % of total at my house and I doubt I even walk out to the front porch to see it.

Its just the moon over the sun, its bad for your eyes, if you look though the right filter its still less then thrilling.

I made a picture for those who will not see it, LOL yea its that much fun. :D

Here in Eastern Missouri we're getting good obscuration.
Small surrounding towns are agog ---for the tourism, not the view.
Apparently there's some Asian tour company alone sending hundreds of visitor/viewers to our wine country in tiny Defiance, Missouri.
"Expect local traffic jams" is the constant spew of the talking heads.

Got my glasses, and we're getting a free pizza party at work.

It's one day. Hell, it's 2-1/2 minutes!
I hope everyone has a good time and I can just get home expediently after work.

I remember well the 1999 eclipse in Europe. Me and two friends were driving through the mountains of Austria and stopped at a green downhill meadow. We had luck with the clouds. It was a magical moment. Everytime I drive on a country road and see a similar green downhill meadow with a forest behind, I see us laying there.

I remember well as a child watching a total eclipse with my family through lenses from my dad's welding helmet. I've never forgotten it, and am happy to say that I will be taking my boy camping two days so we can see this one. I hope he never forgets this eclipse with his dad. Traffic to and from this thing is going to be a PITA. Go Eclipse! Otis

Glad it ain't me . I have enough grief with the self entitled hot air balloon festival people around here . They have no sense of boundaries and gates when they are tracking their balloons .
I accommodate those that ask to trespass . Run off those that don't .

Not quite true. I racked a batch of Rum this AM then drove Albany, Oregon for the eclipse tomorrow. Hanging with a stillin buddy from CA now, starting the BBQ, tasting each other's recent successes, and planning our next ferments and a strip run that may start tomorrow, if we get home tomorrow night (traffic.) So while we are not actively stilling during the eclipse, we are currently focused on the moonshine. ;-). Happy stillin. Otis

I have to work tomorrow :( People who could get off are headed down to OR. They say we are still going to get 95% coverage here. I dug out my little table top 78mm telescope which is apparently the only one I still have a sun filter for  I did have one for most of them including the 5" but now can't find any. I think I sold them all a while back because they were worth so much :( I also foolishly didn't get any of those paper glasses before the stores sold out. Some people are trying to sell them on Craigslist for $50 a pair! For $2 gasses :esurprised: One thing you guys talking about welding helmets might consider is that I've read you have to have a shade 14 lens, so be careful. I also understand that 2 shade 7s equal shade 13 but can't really say that for sure. Also I've read that the auto darkening ones will not auto darken from sunlight.

I also have 250-300lbs of apples sitting out to absorb those solar eclipse rays :D I may even try to process them tomorrow.

Got 5 apple trees loaded and one peach that will get the rays tomorrow .I'm loading the still in the morning with 7/8 gallons of corn/oat all grain strip for a spirit run . I'll just look out the still house window to watch my part of the world grow darker . No need to look up in the sky for confirmation .

Town is quite, lookn like a holiday or something.
Local TV stations havin all day live coverage .
Orchardale farms in Hopkinsville havin astronomers from all over the world speakn on a podium ..Head Bishop of astronomy from the Vatican is here for worship and knowledge..Governor of Ky and top astronomers explained how and why Hopkinsville is the point of totality ..Wow.
Everyone in the country seems to have come down here.
Orchardale Farm the absolute point of full coverage and said to be best spot in the country for eclipse..The Mayor of Hopkinsville and Casey Jones Distillery rep presented bottles of their Eclipse Moonshine to the governor and Lt governor and all NASA officials in attendance ..Said the corn used was sent to space, then returned for authenticity ..Theres your gimmick Bushman.
Rackn this morning, may get that eclipse run in sometime today hopefully. :D
