What on earth is a “milk bar”?

A pub with no beer? I haven't seen one since the early seventies when I left to go back to NZ. My local served ice cream, milkshakes, fizzy drinks, fish & chips. Booth seating, juke box, pool table, arcade games.

You people also call Jandels 'Thongs', and chilli bins 'eskys', so it comes as no surprise to read of this also strange naming convention :)

When at the Marriott in DC the closest place to by smokes was at a near by drug store, for me that was truly ironic.

Thinking about it more and more milk bars are called cafés now, where I grew up as a kid they were called milk bars or even the dated malt shop. Delli's might double as a milk bar but often not, either way most are called cafés now guess it sounds more cosmopolitan even if ya sitting in ya stubbies tanktop and thongs.

What's a "stubbie"? Sandals?

Here we have corner stores, usually called liquor stores. They have drinks and snacks and maybe some bare essentials if you are in a pinch - motor oil, bare essential cooking stuff, bathroom supplies. But mostly they exist to sell beer and liquor.

Drug stores are bigger. Have more stuff, probably a huge makeup department, toys, maybe film developing, lots of first aid/medical supplies and usually a pharmacy.

Times have changed, not so many around these days. Sort of a cross between a cafe and a 7-11. A place where you could buy a milkshake, smokes, sweets, a pie. Most had a few booths, a bit like Arnold's in Happy Days.

A normal stubby holds approximately 330 ml.....not to be confused with a Dawin Stubby which in most cases holds 2 Litres.

One of the old mans fishing trip videos they were out from Karumba qld and one of his older (as in WWII vet old) mates was sitting in front of the camera commentating on their catch, gawd hard to watch. Had the stubbies pulled up a bit high friggen swede hanging down each side like tennis balls in socks, fishing vid with a horror movie twist :esurprised: . Stubbies in the tropics makes for some scary shit.

"The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultraviolence."

Maybe you need to revisit the book again.
