mower issues

Post by googe »

Hi all, i have a John Deere sx85 ride on. the previous owner butchered the wiring trying to fix it. ive replaced the starter switch and coil and plug and hopfully have the wiring right from online manuals etc. When i turn it over i dont get spark at the plug, holding the plug against the motor body. but when i hold the plug in my hand and touch the motor body i get a decent kick. Can anyone help please?. im at the point of no return and will burn it to the ground shortly!!. Thanks.

Gap that new plug to 0.76 mm or 0.030 inches.
Weak spark --enough to jolt you, not enough for spark--is likely the ignitor (ignition module).

This is from my friend in the mower repair business.

I think the mower has a 13hp Briggs and Stratton.
A suggestion for trouble shooting
There's a wire between the ignitor "coil" and the ignition switch.
Disconnect it and see if the spark gets better.

your not gonna get spark unless its grounded somewhat
hold it on the head and if you get a shock, you got fire
its better to think like a fool but keep your mouth shut, then to open ur mouth and have it confirmed

Thanks for the advice fellas. Seems your mate was right still life. I rang the local mower mech, and he said it sounds like the coil, I said I'd just got a new one, he said bring it in and he'll test it, was a total dud he said, so he's ordered a new one, will be here Monday. Yep, 13HP shady.

Good result googe . Had a similar experience with a so called brand new ignition module in my Stihl chain saw . The old one would cutout when it got hot ..... so did the replacement ,the third one's still going .
Its fine when you are the mechanic to confidently diagnose a new product as faulty .... and it does happen . But for us poor common folk , its hard to believe a new part is faulty especially when it behaves the same and so we go on a wild goose chase blaming everything else LOL
