Around $100 "cruise cash" to blow before Saturday

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

Around $100 "cruise cash" to blow before Saturday

Post by nerdybrewer »

I'm on a cruise, it will end Saturday morning.
Before that I have to burn about $100 in cruise cash - use it or lose it.
They do have hapy hour at the pub every day but even I might not be able to drink that much by Saturday morning.
There's a tax & duty free shop and they sell liquor.

I'm looking a 2 bottles of Elijah Craig small batch 47% Bourbon for $49 total as one possibility.
There's some halfway decent Tequila - Hornitos black barrel Anejo 100% Agave at 2 bottles for $56.
Many different Johnnie Walker Scotch variants at different prices.
Some Glenfiddich different color packages at different prices.
Not into Vodka or Gin, I do like Bourbon, Rum, Tequila and Scotch Whisky.

Anyone familiar with the Elijah Craig small batch bourbon? Any good?
Have you tried the Hornitos? Reviews out there make it sound interesting.
Of course they have the standard stuff, Makers Mark etc...

Here are the tasting notes by The Chaps at Master of Malt
Nose: Honeycomb, fresh cedar, marmalade and some spicy cardamom seed.

Palate: Baked apples with a dusting of cinnamon, followed by fresh honey and cookie dough.

Finish: Lingering nutmeg and charred oak.

Thank you,
My ship "internet package" won't let me connect to many sites so this is definitely useful information.

Craig is a good value. It had an age statement of nine years until recently and is still bottled at 47 ABV. It is usually low to mid-thirties in my region. Enjoy!

My area has a high tax rate and a bottle fee.
Getting it for no tax saves a lot right there, plus of course this is not "real money" so that makes it even better!

Cruise cash? Nice concept. The first and only cruise I went on about 16 yrs ago my bar tab was over $800.
When I was a boy, I prayed for a bicycle. I soon learned G~d doesn't work like this so I stole a bike and prayed for forgiveness.

The have a "drinks package" that would have cost us over $750 for the cruise.
With happy hour and on shore drinking I've kept my total bar tab under $100 and most of that was "cruise cash".
The drinks at the little restaurants in Cabo and Vallarta are large and the pours are generous.

I bought two of each, the Hornitas Tequila and the Elijah Craig.
All set for guests, don't need to serve them my own this way!

I like Hornitos, it’s 100% agave.

I drink Camarenas more, because it’s cheaper, but that’s some good stuff.

I find this kind of coercion very distastefull. you purchase a ticket for $ X they hand you back

some of YOUR money in the form of company script (cruise cash) that if you don't spend it

the company retains YOUR money as a bonus, tip, whatever. YOUR money in their pocket

without free choice.

Sorry if I said anything that led you to believe that is the case.
In fact I won the cruise (for the two of us, my wife and myself) and only spent the money I wanted to spend on extras and upgrades and shore visits.
The "cruise cash" was in addition to the win.
The catch is I have to use it here.
So I've got 4 bottles of pretty good stuff to somehow pack into our luggage for the way home.
My wife spent the other $100 on shopping, which made her happy.

it can't get better than free, I truly hope you have had a good time.

I also hope that you understand that the BS I wrote was not a reflection on you

but a rant on my part about companys leveraging their customers to extract maximum profit

"get them in the gate and lock it" then "milk them till they bleed" hotels, theme parks, movie theaters,

and even cruise ships. I do hope you have had a good time.

Oh believe me I do.
The stuff I see going on here, "Shopping Events" where people put their name in a box so there can be hoopla and drum up excitement to buy overpriced jewelry and watches and all that stuff.
All kinds of ways for them to part the fools and their money.
I treat it just like I'm in Vegas.
Spend their money on real stuff and get the heck out of town.
If I get a few nice drinks along the way even better.

My son in law picked us up from the airport.
I showed him what I brought home and asked him which he wanted to try.
Hornitas!

That's really good Tequila!
Really smooth.
Caramel, vanilla and certainly oak (of course) but not the sharp oak you might get from an "over oaked" spirit, just really nice flavors and under it all that 100% Blue Agave Tequila.
I am a fan of this Tequila.

I opened one bottle of Elijah Craig last night before bed and poured one shot.
Sipped it, really smooth and complex.
Tasted vanilla, caramel.
I'm very happy with the choices I made, good sipping whiskey and tequila.
