Sanitize my transfer pump and hose ???

New mashing protocol has me fermenting 8 gallon batches then pumping into a 55 gallon FG blue barrel until full.Usually wait for ferment to clear a bit before transfer. Works great.

No indication of infection whatsoever on the last ferment but after the transfer I noticed what seemed to be a lacto infection floating atop after a day or two.

Never happened before so I'm thinking it may be prudent to sanitize/soak my pump and hose in some Star San or Clorox/water mix to clean things up a bit.

Thoughts ?

Pumps and hoses are a good idea to run some starsan through for a few min ( recirculated) or even just a hot water flush may be enough. Don't take much to make a 5 gallon bucket of starsan and it's good for a while.

Take it with a grain of salt. A lacto infection can be really benificial depending on the drink desired

Keep chlorine bleach as a cleaner out of the distillery equipment! It contributes to TeCA, tetrachloroanisole infections of your equipment and fermentation area.

Chlorine-containing products were used in the past to treat corks in wineries. TCP (2,4,6-trichlorophenol) is formed when chlorine reacts with phenols in the corks, wood (barrels), cotton rags, mops,...even open water.

Chlorine Bleach can become a precursor/fertilizer for some molds. Ever put Bleach in your toilet and it seems the mold comes back faster?

We set the process so that we pump stillage, ferment and last clear water into a new ferment. Use PBW, Oxyclean, Starsan or heads as cleaners. There is an oxiclean with no scent out there.
