Extra SCR

Post by Danespirit »

Having fried a TRIAC/thyristor on my SCR controller, i decided to buy a extra one (in fact two).
Now the problem with those cheap chineese ones, are the somewhat underdimensioned heatsink (gets a bit to hot for my liking).
So to solve this issue, i mounted a additional heatsink kindly sponsored by a old pc.
Here are a few pictures of this very simple build.
SCR is rated for 3,8 KW and runs a 2 KW element.
Total cost...a mindblowing 6 $ and a can of beer while mounting.

Nice Job!!!!

If you have some cpu cooling fan artic silver for example...... it will help transfer heat from the triac to the heat sink. Often without it could have issues. I highly recommend using heat sink compound.

I need to get off me behind and order stuff to go electric........ So I can run inside this winter.

Thanks.. :)
At first i thought about adding a fan to it.
But then again i calculated on the heat it could absorb and figured i needed a 220VAC to 12 VDC step down module to run the fan.
So i just left it that way, my primary controller however , will be fitted with a fan.
Oh..i forgot to mention i put some termal paste on it, to conduct the heat from the original heatsink to the one added.
A screw is going all the way through and holds the TRIAC onto the heatsink.
M4 threads are cut in the added heatsink.

Yeah I was thinking fan also... but if in a cool place and the is air movement could do without... a small fan could be setup to blow on it.. at the computer recycle place here you can get 120-12V recycled power converters/transformers and run a 12V PC fan cheap. Last one I picked up was 1$ Often 5v ones also.
