You get what you pay for. This is true for most things you rely on. I've read that SCRs are cheap so buy more than one for WHEN it craps out. That never sat well with me so I go with SSR and SSVR builds and none have ever glitched on me once.

I'm sure SCRs work when they work.

Heat is what kills them. It will be much more reliable if you throw away the heatsink it comes with and use a more substantial one instead.

They fail because they come with too small of a heatsink or because it has a cheap fan that will fail and cause it to overheat.

After reading through some of the threads of people who built their own controllers, and because I am not an electrical genius, I may just buy one that is already made up. It will cost more but I'll have something I can just plug in like the two in the links below:

After reading through some of the threads of people who built their own controllers, and because I am not an electrical genius,

It's relatively simple to build a 120v controller.. it's a simple A goes to A, and B goes to B, almost as simple as changing a wall plug.. so one does not need to be an electrical genius, just mindful of how to follow a schematic..

And you want to be a stiller, which requires much more mindfulness.. but then, if the wiring is done as pictured on your boiler element, yeah it may be best to buy..
