Physically? Or from an "engineering perspective"?frodo wrote:burner question,

How many BTUs/hr is your home furnace?
Home furnaces typically run on natural gas, which is different (BTU content) than propane. You absolutely can run on natural gas, but be aware that it has a lower BTU/hr potential than propane. Jetted properly (typically requires a larger orifice), natural gas burners can be adapted to propane.

Re: hvac burner assembly
the ac is a 3 ton..as far as the btu,,,??
burner is 2 row
i found the model #looked online was not able to find a cross reference concord CG-80TBo5oD12A
i sent an email to manufacture asking btu rating for unit
physically, as i have the unit,,,why not use it..or just the regulater, i can make a burner out of pipe
it has the orifice for propane installed, i do not have naural gas out here
Re: hvac burner assembly
Im sure you can make it work too, but the problem will come when you want to turn it down. My banjo burner has nails in every other hole to block some of the gas and flame when I needed low and slow. Those turkey fryers are everywhere used and cheap. Try craigslist and you might get the big pot and lid with it.
Im running electric now so I don't us it but I remember back when it would burn too hot and go out if you tuned it down too far. Now its used to make low country boil and steam oysters.

AHHHHH! i see your point, they are designed to run full tilt boogie
also have an old gas grill,,,i'll just make a burner for the reg. t hanks for the input

hvac burner
it works, and can be turned down using the regulator,
if it will be what i want remains to be seen

Re: hvac burner assembly
by that md number Id guess thats a 80000 btu furnace most have ratings in md or serial number if ya know how to read them .Not sure on yours but that would match the 3 ton system.Take much smaller to do a 5 gallon pot. But I think you already knew this.
I use a pot still.Sometimes with a thumper

yes,, i figured to plug off one side. after i got it up on running.
hey Tater, I am just trying to figure out the cheapest way, gas or electric on how to power it up
I will go which ever way the dollar sign wind blows. if you catch my drift;
i have an element and a burner, been considering both
so far gas is winning out. since I have =0= invested in the gas burner.
also have a log lighter, that experiment is next.

frodo,
Economics justification probably depends on how often and how many runs you intend to distill. For 1 run, propane wins. For 10 runs, propane probably leads with electricity coming very close. For 100 runs, the cost of gas is much greater than the electric solution's capital cost and recurring cost....win ... electricity.

gas wins out, going to use a natural gas log lighter
but had to make a orafice for it. normally, drill a hole in a cap. easy done
not this time. the orafice has to be inside a threaded nipple, with out screwing up the threads
tough little build
1/2'' copper fits into 1/2'' brass nipple.
need to blank off copper, to drill blank to accept a threaded female adapter that holds orafice
cut copper pipe, flattened it, drilled it to size of brass adapter
sil flossed flat copper to end of copper pipe. cut off excess ground down the flat to the diameter of the copper pipe.
inserted adapter, soft solidered to flat
inserted the adapter i made into a 1/2'' brass nipple, soft solidered it. installed orafice
put the burner together...out of damn lp LOL
managed to get a POS flame,,out of empty bottle
need full bottle to adjust air to get pretty blue flame

Re: hvac burner assembly
after some repiping, and making lp orafices,
i came up with a double burner system.
using both burners to heat a keg up to temp, with a valve to shut one burner down
when temp is reached
Frodo's DB system
using a 30 pound reg [bayou classic]
only thing that is original hvac is the burner vortex/cap
piping and orifices are fabricated

Re: hvac burner assembly
That double jet engine might make a keg take flight if you turned it around! Looks like it will crank out some serious heat. You just running a fryer regulator to cut it back for your slow run? The cheap ones I had were a little figity and I never invested in a quality one before switching to 'lectric.

Re: hvac burner assembly
yeah,,i figure to run both burners,,to get 10+ gallons to heat.
then cut one off, and turn down the reg..thats why such a big condensor.
i think i might be running hot and fast
ultimate goal will be electric in the future, and transfering burner to my forge use gas instead of charcoal
to heat metal [RR spike's] for knives

Re: hvac burner assembly
Yep 80k BTU, that's an awesome set up. The manafold pressure would typically be set at 3.5" water colume to get the proper burn with the air shutters the way they were when it was pulled out of the furnace but you could definitely down fire it like a regular Turkey fryer base and adjust the regulator along with the air shutters. I'm not sure how low you could fire it due to the way the burners were originally designed to work with an inducer motor for draft. I guess the only draw back would bet it would start to shoot up if the reg was to low. I'd make sure it doesn't while running it because you'll definitely get some rollout at the bottom if it does. Cool set up though.
