gas burner

Post by stoker »

I have an old rusty burner. It used to give a strong blue flame, but recently it's an ugly yellow flame with lots of soot, I get a layer carbon on my pot.
Can that be due to difference between propane and butane? (I don't know what I used before and should check what I use now)
Other possibilities would be the pressure regulating thing (no idea what it's name is) or the burner even more rusty then it already was (and blocking an oxigen inlet?

thanks

Two things to look at Stoker, first check the orfic and make sure it is clean, mud dobbers really like it in and around there. If that checks out it is most likely the regulator.

thank you.
I've used several regulaters, all with yellow flames, including one regulater that I'm certain of I've had a blue flame with.

I'll have a look at the burner tomorrow.

just a tip for dealing with that black soot on the pots. Don't get it wet when you are cleaning it. Use an oily rag. You can also spray it with pam or other oil and then just wipe it away. Works like a charm.

lol, not rusty at all, if you have the regulator figured out for sure, see if you can dimantel the end where the hose goes in, should be a very small orfic there, make sure it is good and clean and blow compressed air from the burner ring back to where the hose connects when you get it apart, like they said, where glasses, you will be amazed what comes out of there.

S'what I thought. My definition of "rusty" is "kick it once and pieces start to flake off"... :D

Im with Blue if its burning yellow then theres not enough air mixing with the gas for what ever reason .if it was the regulator then that would only cut down down the amount of gas thus giving you less flame not making it yellow and sooty..

Mine was doing the same thing-sooting up the bottom of my kettle. Scraped at the burner with a nail and tapped out all the rust flakes, and it burns clean now!

I probably shouldn't leave it outside in the weather all the time...
