Air Condensation

Post by WhiteLightning »

my recent circumstances have caused me to look into simpler methods of distilling my wash. Is it possible to run a still off of propane, but have a worm coil open to the air and not immersed in water?
I'm asking this because the new place where I have to set-up doesn't have power or a stream, so I need to find a economical way to use a condenser.
Thanks

I use an air cooled condenser on my stripping still. It was pertty easy to construct. It is made from 50 feet of 5/8 inch copper.

I can produce 50ml per minute with this condenser.

so I'm wanting to attach a air condenser to a 15 gal sankey beer keg still. I plan to have a 2" copper tubing column 4" high then reduce the rest of the tubing to 1/2" or smaller. I'm going to heat the still with propane, would an air condenser work for me then?
Is better was to circulate water through a condenser w/o using electricity? thanks

Sure. Air does not have the cooling coefficient of water that is why you have to have so much surface area and a lot of air flow. The airconditioner in my house is an air cooled condenser and it is 55000 watt.
Worst case you may have to run a little slower.

How powerful is that fan above the coil - or is it an air conditioner?

It is a cheap small box fan. I bought it at walmart for about $9.99 USD.
