Simple modular shotgun

Post by Lyonsie »

20161114_202322-240x427.jpg
20161114_194802-240x427.jpg
Materials: 36" × 2" tube
7× lengths of 10mm copper at 36 " long,
2× lenghts of 10mm copper at approximately 3" long for water in and out,
Some stainless / copper for the baffles,
And finally 2× 2" ferrules.
Plan is cut 3 baffles (one cut in half and mounted so as to disturb the interior water flow) The other two to seal the ends and a 2" ferrule is then mounted over both ends. I Hope someone finds this useful. I'll post finished pics tomorrow.

doh!!!

What kind of stainless is that stock pot? The one's I've seen are often 18-8, not a 300-series. I don't know if the 18-8 series is as "weldable" as the 304/306 stainless is. I don't think it work hardens as fast as the 300-series do either.

Have you tried to weld the pieces yet?

I don't honestly know. It works and it is going together fine. I wish my kegs were as simple to do :eh:

Unfortunately this wont be finished today as planned. As the copper came in a roll (straightened as much as possible) im still finding it next to impossible to maintain clearance around the tubes along the lenght of the build. It will go to about halfway no problem but then i will have to support them apart somehow.
Anyway this got me to thinking, as it needs support in the middle anyway maybe i should just cut it in half, make two more baffles and build 2 × 18" units as described, with the cold water feed split before it enters them. This should be far more efficient due to the increase in cold water coming in. Or is this pure overkill?

I'd say every shotty build that is a longish has at least one baffle in the middle of the shotty too, some have 2.
Just cut out a section off each of them to let the water flow properly

Thats exactly what i ended up doing. This is going to be welded tomorrow i think. Welder says he's near finished and my boiler and should be back tomorrow. Im now trying to wind a coil to go in here. The copper is full of water and capped both ends. Its currently running up my stairs and into the bathroom.
It will not bend still. Its kinkier than an eastern European hooker. What am i doing wrong? I dont want to ruin it.

whats the coil for?
You were going to run pot or pot on thumper right, you will not need a RC then :eh:

What OD is the pipe?

Never done a coil myself, so can't advice much.
I got a meter of 1/2 CSST from woodies for teh RC on my current build, soooo easy

Its a reflux coil the picture shows the top section of the column. The vapours will exit from the section below this and yes i am going to run it as a pot with a thumper, but i have the copper to wind a coil so im basicaly just making it for future use while im waiting. The coloum is 4" and the copper is 10mm. I think im going to scrap the water and try salt.

Welds

Well the simple shotgun is still a work in progress. Still stirring was spot on the steel was shite. I wrecked her pot for nothing  And there's no flowers in it for her either. It should be finished this week i have heavier gauge steel now. Anyway i managed to get this condenser finished in the meantime.
Got my coils done, unfortunately it kinked so its not in one peice. But they work.

You did some fine work there with that shotgun.
If that RC is going on top of any reflux still, it needs a vent to atmosphere...or you will end up with a non-functional still turning into a bomb.
A hole around 6-8 mm will do the job and keep you and the still healthy.

Ha ha i tend to get easily distracted. Although im getting close to completion now. ( Probably not though as i haven't built a reflux coloum yet  )
It's safe as houses at the minute because it won't be used. I plan on making whiskey, its simply a lid for my pot still at the minute. I'll most likely experiment with packing the coloum and making some vodka before i go near building a full reflux and the drill will definitely be back out then. In the meantime it will be trying to get as close to Jamesons and jack daniels as i can for me. ( I didn't get sidetracked from that bit.)

Finally got back to this today. Ended up replacing the plates again. This time i chose copper. I made 4 baffles to disrupt the water flow along its length, and then decided to try solder the ferrules on rather than have them welded.
The 2" pipe and the ferrules are 2mm thick steel so i made the end caps 1mm less than their outside diameter thus leaving a channel around the shotgun i hoped would accept the solder bed.
Anyway it didn't work. I've really got to order some decent flux. So ferrules getting welded tomorrow shotgun is essentially finished now. I just have to get a reducer for the bottom.
