milk can boilers

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

milk can boilers

Post by moon_liner »

Has anyone had any luck finding milk can boilers like the ones for sale at hillbilly/mile high distilling? I am sure there marking them up, (I would if I were them.) I would like to find one in the 26 gal. / 100l range. but something tells me I can find it cheaper on the old interweb, but I am running out places to look. any help would be awesome.

Try some internet searches. I think the major source for those is India. It could be that the shipping cost would run the cost up more than what you could get one for from Hillbilly or Milehigh.

I run across them once in a while at flea markets, but they're usually in the 5 gallon size. Wish I could be of more help.

They are made in China, and they do sell them for a lot less. With shipping I figure I would have only saved $50. But it isn't worth the risk. First you gotta send them the money for the milk can and the shipping, and you have no guarantee that they even ship it. Then there is the little matter of customs, if they decide there is something wrong they hold you responsible. These days customs pay extra scrutiny to stuff shipped here from china. If there is something wrong or defective then what? Unless your heart is set on a milk can get yourself a keg. You can use the keg as is and put a 2" column on it. If you prefer you can easily modify the opening to what ever size suits you.

Hello moon-liner,
Still a newbie I suppose, but on the milk cans...I had to resort to a 5 gallon one in SS and then had to import it to Canada.
Expensive but worth it at the time.
It's just a plain jane antique milk can (in Stainless and one piece construction), but I need to build it to get the pleasure out of that part of it.
I'm now in the process of collecting all the pcs to build it when I get home from trucking.
As for finding anything bigger than 5 gallons...it would have to be a manufacturer or something as anything I've found is never bigger than 6 gallons.
As I am progressing from a small personal allembic pot at 2.5L....by the time this one is done and run it will probably be too small also, but I'm having fun
Good luck, J.

Milk can make the best boilers you can buy!
SS, with a large removable tight fitting lid with two handles 8) .
There is nothing better but custom built copper stuff.
I picked up a 5 gal at the swap-meet for $35.
Some one was using it to brew coffee.
Too bad it is not 10 gal!
All you have to do is add a 2" union and you are good to go.

My primary boiler for 3 years was a 14 gallon stainless milk jog. It was an ornament in the living room i grew up in. Mom asked me if i wanted it she was gonna throw it out. Now I'm building an electric setup with a keg, so I'll probably patch the lid and use it as an ornament again.

You can get an 8 Gal or 15 Gal Milk Can Boiler Here : http://www.brewhaus.com/Distillers-and-Parts-C96.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
I Have the 8 Gal Induction Boiler & It Is Excellent. Great Workmanship & Superior Clamp Design.
Uses a Ring Clamp w/ Silicone Rubber Gasket. Far Superior to the Triple Clamps used on Others.

True, but you also get your name on a .gov list. Many would prefer to avoid that for obvious reasons.

Found this on eBay....30 L stainless steel milk can. Bought 2, one of which my wife uses to store bird seed. I suppose one could make a nice boiler out of one or use it for a fermenter.

Try looking on Amazon. Pure PTFE packing 5/32" x 10' is $17.26. You can get big rolls and large diameters for more money too. Depends on what you are doing. Google is your friend.

Something to consider when wanting a larger boiler than milk cans have to offer there's fustis. They're stainless steel and used for olive oil. The largest I've found is 26 gallons.

Not sure, I haven't ordered from them. I actually purchased from Brewhaus and they just said on the customs form that it was an electric kettle.

If that's all your buying, then there is no need to worry about the "man". It's a kettle I boil beer in if asked.

I just received my milk can and was disappointed to see silicone under the top lid. I've never worked with valve stem packing before. Will this stuff stay up into the recessed area and form a tight seal? The gasket is 1/2 inch wide and 25 inches in circumference, meaning I'll have to do multiple loops around to fill the entire area.

Does this valve packing stuff work this way?
3 x 60 inch Bokabob, 8 gallon boiler, 4500w

3 inch pot still head, reduce 2, then to 48 inch 1/2 condenser. 8 gallon boiler, 4500w
