old crystal glass

Post by shadylane »

Crystal glass looks pretty.
But you don't want to store your liquor in them.
Lead is used in the manufacturing of old crystal glass.

It might explain why some of us old farts are considered eccentric.
But then, putting up with young people often exceeds the limits of our medication.

If you really search for old fancy glass decanters you will eventually find some URANIUM glass decanters, they were very trendy and they glow GREEN when put under a UV light. These are made with Uranium for some reason.
I am serious.
probily wouldn't want to be using those for aging either.

"Completely Safe And Harmless". I love it.

As far as atomic spirits, if I want that I'll drive over to Hanford and pick wild berries for a maceration.

Check out what I found.
It has been proposed that the historic association of gout with the upper classes in Europe and America was, in part, caused by their extensive use of lead crystal decanters to store fortified wines and whisky.[16] Lin et al. have statistical evidence linking gout to lead poisoning.

I bet that explains why some of the old shine drinkers complained of gout they may have got it from lead soldered stills.

I have a collection of very nice antique crystal decanters which I no longer use for this very reason. I read the study about this and found this
"One research team measured the amount of lead migration in Port wine that was stored in lead crystal decanters. After two days, lead levels were 89 micrograms; after four months, lead levels were between 2,000 and 5,000 micrograms.
White wine doubled its lead content within an hour of storage, and tripled it within four hours.
Brandy stored in lead crystal for five years had lead levels around 20,000 micrograms.
Any liquid can leach lead from crystal just as effectively as wine and other alcoholic beverages.

To put these numbers into perspective, the EPA’s lead standard for drinking water is 50 micrograms per liter."
So I stopped using them and they just sit empty on the buffet :( even new lead crystal is still 24% lead and the lead leaches out.
One more thing, now that I know those atomic energy labs exist I want one!!!

If you found some of Kiwikeg's uranium decanters and used them, you could glow enough to save on the lighting bill. Then the extra lead would serve as shielding.

It's usually called Vaseline glass because it is similar in color to Vaseline and funny enough it doesn't usually have lead in it.

I've had several examples in the past but they were too valuable to use and for that matter keep so they were sold rather quickly. Now I'm thinking, for that matter most in my current collection may be too valuable to keep as well.

There were a lot of cool things done with glass in the late 1800s that couldn't be done today due to various factors, mostly health. Lead, Mercury and just about every other element has been used but when dealing with clear glass a black light can be your best friend. Lead crystal glows a bright white, old soda glass looks a sickly green and most modern non-lead glass will be black (No glow of any kind), I'm not sure how old Vs new pyrex looks but I bet there is a difference since the formula was changed. So the main thing to be aware of is that even today lead crystal is 24% lead and may leach but if you aren't sure test it with a black light.
