Theres no bad bomb disposal experts. There's good ones and dead ones. Im sure its safe enough till it isn't.
The scary thing about it is in the first video he has a genuine grain bill for poteen. So you would have to assume that thats really how he checked for leaks too.

Reminds me of the old timers that would splash a little shine on the side of the still.
If the vapors from the shine wouldn't burn anymore. the proof was too low to save

There are many things in that video I wouldn't do. But who am I to say when they've been doing it longer than Americans.

Nice galvanized bucket too. But pretty cool video, thanks for the link.
Re: How to check your still for leaks irish style.
Lots of craziness in that video - what I watched of it... The checking for leaks with a flame is one... Then there is using a saucepan to fill a galvanized bucket that would clearly fit into the barrel of wash... It's not like he was trying to avoid transferring solids by using the saucepan... And then there's the ceramic pitcher being used to transfer from said galvanized bucket into the kegs funnel rather than pouring directly from the bucket into the funnel... I guess some folks just like doing things the dangerous and hard ways... I had to stop watching at that point...

I too wondered about the scooping of the distillate in stead of just pouring it into the funnel.
Maybe it is about counting the volume?

Id say so as to try and disturb the yeast bed as little as possible. Although i somehow doubt this based on everything else.

That is why he scooped the wash into the bucket. I would do that too, indeed for not disturbing the yeast bed.Lyonsie wrote:Id say so as to try and disturb the yeast bed as little as possible. Although i somehow doubt this based on everything else.
But why scooping out the low wines out of the bucket into the funnel into the keg? Why not pouring into the funnel?
Re: How to check your still for leaks irish style.
Probably because he's a culchie.
Ah seriously i dont know it could be just for the cameras maybe?

yeah deffo just a show for camera, I know the lawmen (Garda) are not as strict here as in US.
But selling a dvd on how you make boze with your face in it makign boose is a bit to much for them to ignore.
I'm sure they had permissions and was asked to chuck it when done, or give to the Garda for "disposal"

I was taught to use a piece of glass to look. Technically this method should work though, I would think it's like running a propane stove, as long as the regulator don't break you will be ok. It's not much of a regulator though.

Re: How to check your still for leaks irish style.
Well spotted with the wood cap. I saw it watched him cool it and wondered was it worthwhile. That's as far as it got for me. I never once thought about how it might effect the flavour.
In saying that, would there be any benefit?
This video is well before my time.

What was the stuff he used to seal the leaks? It looked like wood chips.

It got a name I could not hear good, but it is made of oatmeal, flour and water, so the voice over says.

I was hoping that pail was stainless steel and just kind of old.. Sure hope it wasn't galvanized ... The wood cap is really cool and the water is probably to get the end to seal.
As far as testing for leaks with fire, I'm not going to do it. But it stands to reason that if all the "air" is purged from the inside of the boiler then the fire cannot enter. Oxygen is needed to burn and apparently there is none when this man does the test. It would be a long bad day if there ever was.

Re: How to check your still for leaks irish style.
I saw that video some time ago.
Besides "leak testing" with a flame, the galvanized steel bucket caught my attention..
The wooden cap with galvanized rings around it doesn't make it any better.
Well, I'm not sure everyone over there is practicing that way...a lot of people would have second thoughts about these methods.
