Self stirring steam mash idea

Post by jedneck »

Got an idea for stirring the mash with the injected steam. I'm thinking about using a venturi jet, similar to a jet pump in a well. My thinking is that the steam will pull the mash through the venturi. I'm thinking about a 1/2 steam line inside a piece of 1 1/4 or 1 1/2. I attached a quick scribble. Looking for input before I make scrap outta the scrap bin contents.

I've seen where someone found the nozzels for cheap...ebay of course.
venturi n.jpg
SS and come in dif sizes for ~$12usd

Looks like they'd be easy out of copper.

That should work Jedneck. My venturi smoker uses a similar idea,

I think the mash might be to thick to work effectively. But ya never know till ya try.

Thanks dad and bitter.
Pfshine I grind to flour and mash at 2#/gallon with high temp enzymes. It never gets real thick, about like gravy or melted milkshake.

I plan to do the almost the same thing. I really hope that it will be successful at low pressure (<5psi.) If not well it's time to build a pipe style steam gen. The main difference in my plan is the use of an adapter fitting like this:

In the mining industry to move water with silty sand etc in it they use this method... only thing is the pumps are running 60-100psi The venturi depending on the efficiency Moves 1.5 to 2x the volume outputed by the pump. How many PSI of steam you looking to run?

Brutal I'm gonna use what I have on hand until I see it is worth investing more than time.
Bitter I'm hoping that it works running low pressure, under 1-2#.

@Jed I hope it does work. I have my doubts about either of our designs ability to stir while under 2 feet of corn/grain trub. I have considered setting it at or near the top of the grain bed but we both know that means the grain bed will not be heated well enough. Stirring a grain bed in a large mash takes power. The steam will have to carry that power and transfer it to the mash/grain effectively to keep it active, or it will have to be stirred manually with an electric stirring motor. Determining the power is kind of a challenge and will likely be different on different mashes. My drill has enough power to agitate the whole mash and pull a tornado down to nearly the bottom of a big barrel. We don't have to have that much force. But with too little force it will become no more than an outlet for the steam to bubble out of and rise.

I always said I didn't need one of those pipe style steam gens. Since I've thought of building one with copper though... It's really a hard system to beat. Running some (15psi) pressure in one of those is much much (much) safer than pressurizing a keg. It would add the power to the steam that might be needed. There will be much experimenting before we nail this I'm afraid. Thank you for starting this conversation.

Hope this makes sense. Brutal's drinking tonight. Y'all have a damn good time folks!

Jed is drinking also.
I had the thought that I would blow the steam straight down the middle. Pulling the less grain ladin from the top and pulling it down and hopefully pushing the grain up. I have enuf stuff in the scrap bin to go with a 3/8id in side a 3/4 to 1 1/4. Im hoping to use the bottom of the mashin barrel to help spread the heat.

Jed,

Yep, this works. We use a very crude, very simple (call it impeller) in our still.
