OK so this was on my 5500W element that was steaming water for my recent steam mash. It was a powdery substance that wiped right off. Had no real taste (yes...I tasted it) and I've never had it before. I have only steamed 2 other times and have no recollection of it being there.

I assume it is mineral deposits from my water but I don't think our water is particularly hard...

It's lime scale I think, you probably have hard water.

Thank you gents! It just odd that this is the first time seeing it. It is light and powdery like a calcium scale would be....

If just wiping it off does not work vinegar will help you remove it. Sorta like an old kettle and you boil vinegar in it to make it work better again.
