blow off valve for steam rig

Post by NCDS2000 »

is there a preferred blow off valve that people use to build their steam rigs? Assembling a rig and want to make sure.

My preferred "blow off valve" is based on blowing bubbles in water.
Is called a manometer, it's originally meant for measuring pressure and/or vacuum.
On a side note, What kinda steam rig are you figuring to make :?:

actually after reading a bit i did have a question about pressure valves, what pressure range is safe? I was thinking anything under 20psi but nothing over that is ok.

20, yikes! Put it into terms of your kitchen pressure cooker. Those only go to15 psi, and very few times is that required. Have you seen some photos of failed pressure cookers? Uh uh, not me.

I wouldn't feel comfortable with any thing past 1 or 2.

Here's a pic of a manometer I used to measure boiler pressure
If the pressure or vacuum exceeds 1/2 psi the water will blow or suck out to protect the boiler.
I'd recommend using bigger tubing than I used on this mano

Good choice on the PRV, that's what I use.

As far as a stirrer is concerned, this is what I use.

That PRV will work
It would be nice to know what the boiler pressure is before the PRV vents.

I'm a little unsure what you are building/buying ie self contained jacketed boiler or a boiler to supply a steam wand.

For me the rating of the pressure release valve should be determined on the rating of your setup. For example I have a BM setup which was designed to operate at 15 PSI. As such my setup was tested at 45 PSI during the build. I have a PSI gauge and PRV which operate up to 15 PSI and never over.

As one of the other members pointed out you will need a vacuum break. Else you vessel with crush itself on cool down. Many PRVs are combined vacuum breaks also.

Be very cautious when playing with steam. Research, ask questions and keep safe.

Here is the bottom part I made it big enough to fit a 55 gallon drum and it sits just off the bottom of it so it won't touch the plastic
