Steam generator test

Post by copperlover1 »

I have read about people asking if a steam generator for a sauna would work to mash with. I haven't seen anyone test one yet. So I convinced my wife that if it doesn't work I would put it in our shower to add steam to it. So I picked up a 7kw for $150. 220-240 volt. The manual says 31.8 amps. Time for a few pics.

The generator has a prv valve so I just have a valve and vacuum/pressure gauge on top of my magic steam wand.

I've noticed the stock controller is rated for 35°C~55°C
But that shouldn't be too difficult ta hack.

Looking at some reviews on Amazon, I believe that the 35°C - 55°C is the setpoint for the sauna based on a remote temp sensor. If so, no controller hacking would be required, just leave the sensor in free air. I will be watching to see how this works out. They make a number of versions, I wonder if the only difference is the heating element and perhaps an over current adjustment.

Magic steam wand in the barrel. Everything is 3/4". And ss flex line with the inner rubber hose removed. The head is pinned on so is can easily be removed for cleaning.

Impressive  I went the alternate route with a speed controlled paddle mixer in a BOP because I could . That looks to be a promising alternative for folks with more limited resources .

Do you have a thread on that mixer butch. I haven't found it but am struggling on a mixer now. Don't want to take this off topic.
I did try a steam cleaner to heat a 5 gal of water to look at a nozzle design to induce a flow that would not need a paddle but the velocity was not there.

The controls are quite simple. I don't think I will have to do more than just hand the probe in the air. It times out after 60 minutes. But I don't like to leave anything unattended so that shouldn't be an issue either.

I also scored 12" of 12/4 wire. Now to fine a panel clamp to hold it in place.

I looks up my wire it's only good to 20amps. I need to find some 10 or 8 gauge.

She is looking good copper... A side note. I have been steam mashing for about a year and I noticed that those hose clamps (even the SS ones) get real ugly after a while. Just keep an eye on them. I ended up getting a few copper plated clamps and use a very similar wand setup.

The ST-70 is a single phase 220/240 VAC unit, so you'd use the connection diagram on the right with 2 hot lines and a neutral (plus the ground, of course).

For your hook up cable, typically the white wire is the neutral and the 2 hot leads are red and black (or some other color, ie - yellow, blue, etc.). "Green is the ground the whole world around".

So, you'd connect +V1 (red) to L1 and +V2 (black) to L2. And you'd connect N1 (white) to N1 and ground (green) to the ground buss. At least that's the way I interpret the schematic. If in doubt, get a certified electrician to make the hook up for you. You're dealing with enough power to do damage, so be careful.

You sure? The way I read it is that L1 would connect to the 2 L terminals (schematics shows jumpers installed between the 2 L terminals and between the 2 N terminals) and L2 would connect to the 2 jumpered N terminals. GND (PE) connected to GND.

I don't think that it uses neutral.

edit:

I think that the reason that for 220V it is labeled L and N is that in a 380 3phase system you get 220V line to neutral.

No, I'm not sure.

It is a bit confusing according to the text:
"...machine's three-core cable (220V) (two power wires and one earth wire)....Connect earth wire and the yellow and green core wires. Connect the two power cords with the connection port making "L", "L", "N", and "N" separately...".

I see where the 220/240 line voltage would be input between the "L" and "N" terminals if connected with the two hots on those respective terminals. And the Neutral/Ground connected to the GND terminal, as is typical with a 220V 3-wire system.

Fixed that for you. Neutral and ground are 2 separate things everywhere except in the main load center (panel).

I might be wrong, but if I was wiring it.
I'd connect the ground
I'd connect a jumper from L3 to L2 and connect a 220V hot wire to it
Then Jumper L1 to N and connect the other 220v hot wire to it
There won't be a neutral
