Wiki home page

Post by Uncle Jesse »

I think the wiki home page looks pretty good. What do you folks think?

Be honest, I can take criticism and/or disagreement.

The Wiki looks great, Uncle Jesse! Thank you so much for all your hard work! HD is an amazing place to educate a novice to professional statice. It would be interesting to know how many of new craft distillers cut their teeth with your aid.
Thanks again for this amazing home away from home!

Let me grab a screen shot of the wiki we use for job 2. We use it for onboarding people and maintaining reference links. I think the setup would be a good example for use to build off of, but not necessarily mimic.

Looking at the code we used a simple table setup. If we hit up a couple of major categories I think we could make something pretty.

Draft 1:

It's a start. I figure we could use it like a table of contents as if it were a book. UJ - if you like the idea let me know and I can start putting the front page in table form.

I'm not against the idea but I don't like that format as it is. Maybe we can make a page "new home page" or something to tinker with it until we are happy?

Personally I think that Alembic pot head on the main site is a major trademark of this site.

I would be saddened to see it go and I think it would be detrimental to the site - but then, I'm not quite sure how the "Wiki" is intended to fit in withh the overall format. :?

I am not a designer so I take no offense at all to any comments. I was thinking of alt-page a/b/c so we could try some stuff out. If someone can make a rough design I can do my best to make it happen. I'm not a great HTML coder but I figure between the two of us we can make something work.

And Pikey - I would not be changing the outside design, just the text area in it.

Don't we have at least one UX/UI design person on the forum that could help us out???? Lend us your talent!

I want to replace the main site page with the wiki.

And I agree, the Alembic pot logo has to stay!

Someone, I don't remember who, made it, without colors. I colored it in one night, trying to make it look as much like copper as I could.

Cool, lets get some input. And I'll spend time thinking about this.

Right now I'm spending time uploading images for a lot of the pages. Makes it better than flat text.

I know most folks don't read this forum, but if you have bottles of commercial spirits, please take a photo and upload it here. I'll use them for the wiki as they won't be the intellectual properly of some random entity on the web.

I added some lipstick to my pig: http://homedistiller.org/wiki/index.php/index.php ... ge_Testing" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

I'll hold off making more changes until I get some feedback.

I've been looking for other examples and I can't find anything that looks good or wouldn't require a massive amount of change.
Google Image search for "Great Wiki Main Page":

Something like one of theses could be ok:

Haven't had time or motivation to look at this much yet. I like the idea, and I'll start focusing on it soon.

Meanwhile I'm just tweaking pages and uploading images.

I'm at 3,155 edits at the moment though. I wonder if the new wiki has gotten larger than the old one was? Been a few weeks since I went to the internet archive to retrieve data from the old one!

Per the tables thing - it adds significant complexity but I'm not sure how else to keep it organized/pretty-ish. I like the uniformity. I made it a "long" page for mobile. I was envisioning a "Table of Contents" style page, but I am not sure I really got that.

I'm seriously dismayed at the lack of cool examples. It's like the internet has failed us. :)

Massively simplified it, still not pretty: http://homedistiller.org/wiki/index.php/index.php ... _Testing_2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

That would be tons easier to maintain. I can't figure out the table of contents on the top of the page. I have no idea how to get it to display or how to move it on the page.

Table of contents usually works like this:

==Heading one==
===Subheading one===
===Subheading two===
==Heading two==
===Subheading one===

And so on

Uncle Jesse - Can you enable Polls in this forum? I would like to post a poll on which homepage people like and what else they might want on it. Or if you can do it easily:

Option 1: http://homedistiller.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Option 2: http://homedistiller.org/wiki/index.php/index.php ... ge_Testing" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Option 3: http://homedistiller.org/wiki/index.php/index.php ... _Testing_2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Thanks!

My vote is for the 3rd one.

I’ll make it official when Yinzer edits the post for voting.

No clue!

We are trying to get the formulas out of the main site code to recreate spreadsheets for LibreOffice or Excel.
