Boiler upgrade to beer keg

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

Boiler upgrade to beer keg

Post by frikz »

Got myself a nice 50 L SS beer keg today to replace my current 13.5 L boiler:

I'm planning to attach the 51 mm I.D. copper column to the keg using a tri clover 2" weld ferrule from brewhauw. The connector on the keg looks the same as those on the sanke kegs you have in the US; could someone verify the dimensions / whether a 2" ferrule will fit? Here's two pics including some dimensions:

As heat source I'm considering to buy a 9.5 kW (32000 BTU/h) propane burner. Will that do the job if the keg contains, say, 40 L of wash?

one of the things I like about google.

search = 51mm in inches

result = 51 millimeters = 2.00787402 inches

I'd call that close enough to 2 inches for government work.

I know it will fit to the column, I'd just like to check whether it fits to the keg

my mistake

my guess is that these things are universal. cheaper to produce in large numbers that way.

now that I look closer, if I'm not mistaken (never used a keg for a boiler personally) guys cut out that standard keg fitting and weld in their own tri-clamp style connection. Or since it's threaded perhaps you can find a copper end piece to fit but you might have a tough time finding the right thread size on a copper fitting.

My triclamp fitting fits a normal US beer keg perfectly with a triclamp and an O ring. I got my adopter from Brewhause.

right, a 2" triclamp and gasket fit perfectly on a US keg. stpats.com has custom gaskets to mate to a keg, but I prefer to weld on a half couple and use a threaded fitting on the column to avoid gaskets all together.

Doing a good search on the forum actually dug up a similar thread that I overlooked about sanke kegs and there is some useful information on tri-clamp dimensions on stpats.com, so I'm sure a 2" tri clover ferrule will fit directly to the keg.
