I have been looking around the forums with the idea of putting together some ideas for a 2 inch plated column. While it seems like there has been a fair amount of success with 3 to 4 inch columns I see a couple of instances where some very knowledgeable people have put together some impressive 2 inch plate builds only to have had a real problem with off flavors/smells.
and again hereThis is the part I'm having trouble with. All together I took a little over half gallon off that 20L wash I ran. Out of that...only about 200ml of it was even remotely drinkable. The rest was terrible. If you put it in your mouth...you'd spit it out . My friend called it "Mother in Law" mean. Other than that small problem ....my little 2incher seems to be working. I can pull 90% easy on a run of low-wines and hold it. The problem is the distillate doesn't taste good, and seems to follow a potstill run in flavor ...long transition through heads....couple middle jars...then right into tails. ONly...it's at 90%...makes it all taste like battery acid.
I believe the first was from a bubble plate design while the second was a perforated plate tree so I doubt its a problem with one design over the other.Well BK I finished a 9 gal. All- bran run with the new plate tree. I guess the point of making it was to get a little flavor and speed out of a Boka. Speed was no prob. however it was carrying over some clearish gel that sticks to the bottom of my catch jar so I have to slow it down to stop that. I let the hearts air out 2 days then cut to taste and man!!! Tasted like lickin the inside of an old tire. WTF? Guess I'll try to ad it to washes a little at a time to clean it up? Not sure where I'll go with it from here. Cooled ABV before cutting was 160 proof or about 15% lower than a packed column run.
1) Was there ever any resolution to this problem and i failed to find it by searching?
2) Is the consensus here that somehow the plate/flute builds just cant be scaled down to 2 inch?

Just to be clear i am absolutely not suggesting the builders did anything incorrectly in anyway. Infact thats exactly who i am hoping to hear from.
