10,300 miles as the Crow flys

Post by thecroweater »

10,300 miles is the approximate distance from Melbourne to Washington DC, I don't know for sure that's were we might land but its what we are considering. It looks like Suzie and I may be heading to the states at the end of July and spend August there. We am planning on attending a get together of some members in WV and that's about where the planing ends at this stage. We are keen to catch up with members on our travels, I'll post more when I know more but anyone interested in catching up give us a shout

Looks like we will both be on the east coast about the same time. Right now I am pretty free other than a wedding I will be attending on the 6th of August.

If this comes together Mr C and Suzie will be getting the in house guest room accommodation . We have acres of camper space and motels within 10 minutes of the house . Let's see where this goes so I can do some meal planning for a BBQ one evening . I'm thinking a Friday evening to Sunday afternoon time frame with a Saturday evening BBQ . Come as you will and leave when you have to .

Butch, I ain't hinted to it, since you haven't said you were committed. And I didn't want to push you towards nothing. But I reckon that if you say you're having an event, it out to be the official S3 meeting this year. We can figure out a permanent date next year if desired, but there are people that would rather keep to tradition and not skip a year. So if you have it, I'm sure others would agree.

And setting a date sure would help others plan a date too

Let us know your intentions. If not, we'll figure something else out, of course. Can't keep a no good rebel down

This is contingent on Croweater's itenerary . We definitely need to plan as far in advance as possible . He thought he was coming and then plans went to shit and then the gods smiled on him again and the visit is on . Be a damned shame to not have a gathering for him . Don't you all agree ?

I still have some ducks to get in a row but it is looking good for August. Sue's work could still be a fly in the ointment. So faf the plan is looking like landing in DC a look around at the monuments , a museum and bus it to WV unless I can pick up a cheapie car in Washington and drive, been reading up on the various states rules on temp permits etc. so it might be an option if i can find something cheap enough (auctions and the like). I did look at rentals but this is a shoe string trip so would work out a bit much. I haven't made plans so far for afterwards as it depends on how things unfold but we'll keep everyone informed. Anyone no if there are any distilleries around DC worth touring?

4.5 isn't bad, I wouldn't mind. Would just have to coordinate with crow. Course being in a car with me for 4/5 hours might make him think on it.

I'm glad we got this long to plan . We gots a lot of logistics to work out . Rental car transportation sounds like a better option than bus or buying a beater . Lot of histtory in DC . Crowds , expense and traffic always made it look best to me in the rear view mirror . That's just a trucker's view .

Work takes me to DC often and I have found my ways to embrace the city.
For a visit, the monuments and almost all the museums are free, and there is a lot to see outside the city as well.

If I don't need to drive around, and can use the metro, I have my go-to spots now where I can find some of the best food and drink anywhere.

On the other hand, Butch is right, it is a $$$ town, lots of cars and people in the downtown area, and traffic is unique. In their own special DC way, bicyclists have no regard for autos, and pedestrians have not a care in the world for bicyclists or autos. Driving can be very stressful for someone not used to those kinds of road rules.
For me it's the old saying, nice to visit, wouldn't wanna live there.

Sounds like a top notch adventure for you, Crow, hope our paths will cross while you're over here.

Now yer talkin! Northern Michigan is beautiful country, the opposite of downtown DC. Be a shame to come all the way over here and not poke around a bit.

This sounds just like SF. I drive it everyday. Been to Washington a time or two, the metro is the way to go there. As I said earlier when it gets time to head to butchs, I could fly into DC and meet up with crow and drive them to the shin-ding.

If you for some reason decide to head south from d.c. before heading to WVA shoot me a msg. I might know an old boy about 7 or 8 hrs away. Might make a nice pit stop.

2: Crow and his lady get in house accommodation and the rest can camp or motel .
3 : Ain't no stillin goin on .
4 : Bring what you want to drink and share packaged in glass .
5 : DO NOT bring something in that glass that you could not bring yourself to bust on a rock in the unlikely event that the law should pull in the driveway .
6 : I got to rent a piss house for the guys . Women and little kids can use the inside facility .
> That about covers it for now . Them wives is fickle ....... Post any changes you think need to be negociated .

I grew up in and around the DC area and miss the DC downtown not one bit. Folks are buried at Arlington and it's been awhile since I've been there. Virtually no quality seafood here in my area of WV so a trip to the Maine Ave Fish Market. to sample fresh oysters and shrimp is high on my list. Really missin' a nice air conditioned barroom and a decent Long Island Iced Tea as well.
Then back to my little niche in God's country where the deer and the bear play and I can sit on the deck buckazzzz nekkid with a mason jar of apple pie. !!!!!

BTW, I have permanently disabled my alarm clock as well. 8)
