Re: Making wheat malt.
Thanks for the info, that was a lot of questions!
"Kilning" some corn malt right now in the house oven, I am the only one happy right now, windows are open
I've got a line on some fresh Maryland rye that will be harvested next weekend! Will be trying my hand at malting that soon.
Thanks again for the info, carry on

Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me...

I agree with Brutal...shadylane wrote:Starting tomorrow the weather is suppose to be good enough to air dry
For drying the malt, I'm thinking window screens, wood 2x4s, saw horses and if the wind isn't blowing fans.
Tonight I'll sneak outside and get the window screens off while my wife is asleep.
I AM A NEWBIE.
And I want to make a Wheated Bourbon.
When I knew even less than I do now, I read somewhere to soak and drain 12 hours, then repeat.
Went to Lowe's for a few $2.00 buckets, followed be a stop at Farmer's Co-op, bought 50# wheat for $10.
Measured 5# of the wheat, put it in a pillow case (one my wife does NOT use), soaked it in a bucket of rain water for 12 hours.
Drained, then repeated.
I did the manual malt roller, turning my bucket every 3-4 hours.
Was going to dry in the sun, but God said no, and it kept raining.
After a few days some had sprouted - attached are pics of what I had.
Not terrible, but not so good.
Later I saw this video - similar but simpler.

Also tonight when I saw your Dust Cyclone, went back to Youtube and found this:

Seems to make sense not only for winnowing but in cold weather couldn't you modify it to work as a dryer using a small space heater.
Got a lot of tinkerers here, whatcha think?

Re: Making wheat malt.
I like the drum roller, gonna build something similar one of these days.
For now I've been having good luck using trays for malting and air drying.
Since I stopped soaking the grain for long periods, the malt has been germinating more consistently
And I don't have a problem with mold.

Re: Making wheat malt.
If I wanted to buy raw wheat to malt but can't get it all malted quickly, how can I store it so it doesn't go bad? How do you store it after it is malted? The farmers will be harvesting soon so I thought it would be prime time to pick up a couple of bags.

Re: Making wheat malt.
Keep the grain in a cool, dry place.
I store the malt in Ziploc bags in the refrigerator

But I go colder...I have a "brewing deep freezer" reserved for my hops and grains. It kills weevils too, so "cool, dry" becomes deadly for those little carbohydrate eaters.

Ss,
Never thought about throwing them in the freezer. Do you put your finished grain in the freezer also?

Re: Making wheat malt.
It would probably keep the malt fresh longer
JMHO storing wheat seeds in the fridge for a month or three makes it germinate more consistently
