Oil Heated Pot

Post by Andrew_90 »

My ultimate goal is to make Whisky. I have been casting my eyes about for a suitable vessel for a mash tun.

Yesterday I happened on a used (needs external refurbishment) 100 liter Oil Heated Stainless Steel Commercial Cooker that I can get for free. Before I spend the money to hire a trailer and to drive 5 hours there and back this pot seems immanently suitable for a mash tun?

Opinions please.

A photo would help but if you think it can be restored I think it's worth it. If it's done the way I think it should be great for our applications.

As long as the lid can be sealed somehow, that sounds awesome.

For just a mash tun, isn't a 55 gal food grade poly drum capable of maintaining mashing temps without additional heat to maintain temp? I thought the thermal mass of that volume would maintain mashing temp all by itself especially with simple insulation.

Now if your intent is to to be able to mash, ferment and distill in the same vessel then an oil heated pot would be ideal.

You're right. My brain completely ignored the mash tun part and replaced it with boiler. It'll work as a mash tun though.
