Let's build a 3 inch vm!!

Post by john2674 »

Ok as some of you guys might remember I was planning on building a 4inch column this past fall, well work got in the way and I had to shelf it for a while. Besides after much reading and thought about it I really need to source a larger pot to run a column that big.Soo I just ran the trusty 2 inch bok.
Now I'm ready to upgrade to a 3 inch vm.. I have acquired a 15.5 gallon keg (legally) and a 10 foot section of 3 inch thick walled copper pipe, and most of the fittings that I'll need. I also have most of the electrical bits to build a controller to run 2 5500 watt 220 elements!
The specs that I'm leaning toward are a 2 inch output for the vm with a 2 inch ball valve as close to the column as possible. Then a 2 inch 90 and taper down right before the liebig to 1/2 inch?
I would then make my liebig as long as possible and still fit my parrot under it.
I am also planning on running a bok style head on top for foreshots and heads removal. I am planning to use the 3\8 output to wrap around the 1/2 vm tube in the liebig to help create turbulence.
I have a couple of questions for everybody.
1. Any thoughts.or concerns with the build ideas so far?
2. I was thinking about bringing the 3 inch pipe into the exhaust shop and have them flare the end for the sanitary fitting, anybody try it that way?
3, .I read on here to power up untill the column floods then back it down to find the sweet spot. I've never had my column flood on me before, how do I tell when it's happening?a gush of liquid out of the liebig?
Thanks in advance for everybody's help, and also thanks again for all the help so far!!
