Hydroponic nutrients

Post by dave »

I was wondering if hydroponic nutrients could be used for yeast. These split into ions when mixed into water, the same way I would think DAP does. Apparently yeast needs nitrogen, and lo and behold this is also the key nutrient for plants.

I have some hydroponic nutrients here and on the box it says:

"
Concentration of the diluted solution when 2 parts dissolved at recommended rates

Nitrogen 215ppm
Phosphorus 37ppm
Potassium 218ppm
Calcium 152ppm
Sulphur 54ppm
Magnesium 42ppm
Iron 4.08ppm
Manganese 0.96ppm
Zinc 0.48ppm
Copper 0.36ppm
Boron 0.036ppm
Molybdenum 0.012ppm
"

Think this will work?

Why dump all that stuff into yer fermentation when tomato paste is so damn cheap and easy to get?

yea, forget all that (just happen to have some on hand???) and go simple. Tomato paste has done me real well. You can get into nutrient composition later...thats like senior level classes...

Molasses is another great nutrient and makes a very tasty distillate.

Just from curriosity, has anyone tried (and willing to admit) using urine for nutrients ? lots of nitrogen. Maybee that is a little silly, but it occurs to me that it is cheap.
Not trying to be a wise guy, but it is posible isnt it ?

Hmmm.... that would give your mash a certain 'wang' now wouldn't it :P
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

it's maybe possible, but urine contains also things you dont want in your mash I think, stuf that's drained out of your body because it's bad.
the nitrogen and acidity are good

and it doesn't sound very good, does it?

I don't do all sugar wash very often, but the trace stuff from the body could be just what yeast need.

This is not an endorsement of urine, but rather a question

one organism gathers what another organism spills

I use grain or molassis to give the non sugar requirements for my yeast.

I tried re-using turbo yeast with the backset from the 1st batch and 6kg of sugar - thinking that cooked yeasties would be good nutrient for the live ones.
I didnt work. I tried adding tomato paste. I didn't work. I added dregs from home brewed beer. It didnt work. I tried a little bit of aquasol - a soluble plant food. It didn't work.

Perhaps I should just piss in it and add more yeast.

If you have it on hand, it's not going to hurt anything, dave. I wouldn't bother buying more when you run out, though. If you're trying to maintain a cell line indefinitly, the micronutrients are important, but in a "one-off" fermentation, no need to bother.
