1" Concentric

Post by Soft batch »

Many months ago, HD was getting rid of all their copper bigger than 3/4" - picked up a 10' piece of 1" for $7. Decided that a concentric condenser would be the best use. Based my design on a combination of RAD14704/Pyewacket/Johnh89's designs with an integrated collection cup. This is a 12" piece of 1" over a 14" 3/4" with a 1/2" inlet. The top of the condensor is packed with a SS scrubbie. I used RAD's adapter less connections - 14 gauge wire works perfectly filling the gap.

I put this on to a 30" x 1" column with SS scrubbies on my 5 gal electric pot.

I ran my cleaning run, had all kinds of huffing/ spurting issues with the vinegar run. Thought there was major design issues, but decided to run the sacrificial run anyways. Had no issues at all with the alcohol run - must have less surface tension than the water/vinegar and flow through the collection cup better.
Had a couple gallons of feints, ran that through with excellent results.

Had to back down the power just a bit while in full reflux. Collected at a rate of 3/4 ounce per minute at 94%. I am happy with the results. Tails came across with a blast - about knocked me over!

I did notice that my column temperature was 163 f for the entire hearts run - the only thing I could think was the actual sensor of the thermometer was not quite into the column itself - slightly back from the tip? Cheap Harbor Freight meat thermometer.
