Re: My 4" potstill hybrid

I'll let you know after tomorrow. I've got 45l of a wheatgerm wash to put through it. I'm hoping that I can control it down to a trickle on the output, hence the needle valve. The reflux condenser is a bigger version of the product condenser, which is shorter with a 1" coldfinger instead of a 1...

My 4" potstill hybrid

Been workin' on this project for a couple of weeks. Finally got away from my 1" pottie.
Coils are removeable.
Packing tree is removable so I can tune the flavour profile I want.
It's basically a pottie with CM capabilities.

Re: Banjo burning with a yellow flame

If it's not the rust Perhaps you have accidentally closed the brass vents at the end near the valves? Just a thought TAF Never thought of that. I know when I first got it, I adjusted the valves to just give a blue flame. Maybe with the buildup over time I need to adjust the valves out a bit more. s...

Re: Filter mash??

I filter mine through a small, long felt bag. Just to keep the nuts and bolts out of the still. An old (washed) sock would be adequate. If you are trying to filter out fine suspended stuff, don't worry about it. It won't hurt. I normally run about 40 litres of wash. About 25-30 litres of molasses wa...

Site donor designation

What's with the orange site Donor designation? Are we now acknowledging those that donate by giving them an orange name tag. Conversely, those that don't/can't/won't donate are left in black. Bit of a stigma attached to that in my opinion. I may be taking this personally, but I find that conversely ...

Re: Banjo burning with a yellow flame

This mite seam to be a silly question but got to ask. Are you using it indoors or out? Is there proper ventilation? I know its not a good idea to run one indoors. I do run it in the garage, but the door is always open about a foot, and the burner is right next to the opening. I might do a bit of ma...

Did you save the skins over time or have an ultra big vitamin C hit? Everybody pitched in over about 3 months. I have a freezer full of orange skins. :D thats an interesting idea, but you could add the orange peel to the boiler or thumper for the spirit run. You could, but I personally don't like a...

Re: Goddamn weavils

Is there a fail-safe and food-safe way to prevent this? I think it's the luck of the draw. From what I understand, the weavils actually lay their eggs in the grain. You can't see them untill they hatch. Then it's too late. I thought about boiling the grains before I use them, but by then the critte...

Made a nice Orange Rum

Been wanting to make one of these for a while. All the orange skins got saved and put in the freezer. I have about 40 kg of 'em. :D This is how I made it. Dissolved 6 kg molasses in 12 litres hot water. Chuck in 3.5 kg roughly chopped orange skins. I used Valencia and yes, I left the pith on. I ain'...

Finally bit the bullet and upgraded to a 60 litre fermenter. Got sick of all those 20 litre buckets.

Put down a bourbon wash and it's bubbling along nicely thanks for asking.
Got a new pH meter, so now I can stop guessing at it. :D

Got a new bag of cracked corn a few weeks back. Opened it up and poured it into my corn storage hopper. Everything looked OK. I've gone to put a batch of corn likker on and the bin is chock-a-block full of weavils. Bloody millions of them. Can't see the corn for the weavils. At least I can make a wh...

Banjo burning with a yellow flame

My 3 ring burner is playing up, I think. When I first got it, all rings made a nice blue flame when flat out. Then the inside ring started to be more yellow than blue. Now all three rings have more yellow flame than blue. What's the problem here? Is it blocked or rusted inside? There is a lot of gre...

I made up some citric acid solution (about 2 teaspoon in a litre of water) and poured it into the coil and left it there for about half an hour and flushed with clean water. Did this twice. First time the liquid was dark blue, second time a pale blue. I then flushed with clean water again and gave i...

Re: Damn blue distillate - again

Ok, found it. Everybody relax.

I flushed the coil out with some citric acid solution. A quick rinse and a lot of blue colour came out.

I'm off to Bunnings to get some fittings. I will make an adapter to allow acid/water flushing of the coil. Should be easier to keep clean then.

Re: Damn blue distillate - again

OK, now I'm starting to panic. I thought it was my wash that caused the blue tinge. I have just run a double batch of UJSSM and it has a blue tinge as well. My last tainted batch was a wheat neutral, so it's not my washes or a particular recipe. I filtered some liquid through a blank sheet of paper,...

I have the same problem when I age on charred oak. I do a three stage filter process. Cheesecloth, coffee filter then cotton wool. It still gets a sediment in the bottom. Unfortunately, coffee filters are not very good for removing fine sediment. The Harris filters I get have a pore size of about 40...

My thought is this will emulate a Alembic design to somewhat and allow some reflux to occur. No it won't. Once the system heats up, there will be no reflux occurring. Doesn't matter whether the pipes go up down or in circles. If the alembic design makes since how long should the 4" pipe be As ...

My wash is as simple as it gets.

water to 22 litres
1 kg cracked wheat
3 kg sugar
2 tablespoon bakers yeast
citric acid to pH 4.5

I'm going to flush the fermenter this arvo and start a new wash. See what happens.

I did notice that it (probably) happened towards the end of the run. It was OK at 65% when it started. It was OK at 50%. After that I stopped checking the output pot till it got to 10%, then I powered down. There were a lot of oil floaties on top, hence the haziness. I had a smell of the distillate ...

Damn blue distillate - again

I've just stripped 20 litres of my neutral wash and it has a very slight blue tinge. Never happened before with my neutral wash (I've made about 20 batches). Same recipe. I had the last strip run of my UJSSM do the same thing. Again, after more than 30 batches, it has never happened before. ...

I used pearl barley in my bourbon, whisky and malt washes.
It comes in 500g bags. About $2.00 I think.
I just crush it up with the other grains.
Does me for 1 batch of UJSSM for 10 generations. I dump the grains and start again.

no loss of flavor and high ABV... How high? I can hit mid 80's with my pottie at about 1 litre per hour. Admittedly it's not up to the flute standards of single running a wash to 90+% with full flavor By flute do you mean something with 4+ plates? If necessary I will just add a few more plates. I h...
