Then isn't it better to control through management of heat input and/or cooling? A few extra coils on the reflux condensor and/or an increase in the water flow rate would have the same impact (...could do the calcs but no time at the mo and I think they are on the mother site anyway). I try and keep...

When I re-read my last comment I realised the most obvious alternative is just to buy SS or brass valves in the first place. I can over complicate things at times.

According to the RS Catalogue they are. In fact the catalogue picture makes them seem shiny whereas the eBay pic shows them dull, pretty much as you would expect for nickle. Either way, I expect the quickest and most thorough way to clean them up, if it is necessary at all, would be to plate the nic...

Follow-up : These same valves (Hydraulic Needle Valve 1/4" BSP Ports made by UCC (#250024100270)) are currently on eBay at GBP 4.00 each (RS Components normally sell for around GBP 19.00 each). Bargain if they are usable with Eth.

Has anyone any experience of nickle plated brass needle valves? I have a couple but not sure if I have to clean them up before using them. :?:

Over here in the unmentionable territories, we make splendid rum using raw palm sugar from India (known as jaggeri). Highly recommended if you can get it where you are. I've also used this base product to make a wonderful spiced dark rum - delicious when the temperature drops in winter (to around 25C)

where smallish quantities of the fruit/nut/zest is used I put it in one of those little stainless steel tea balls that you ordinarily would hang on the lip of your tea cup. sitting that on the top of the packing seems to work well, espcially with juniper.

New Valved Reflux Still

Rebel_Yell is absolutely right re latent heat, and the coil you have, if working properly, should be quite sufficient for the purpose, in fact a 2" would have probably done just as well (and been more stable). One point I note is that you have the temperature measurement off the top of the colu...

Cooling the condenser water is a major problem for us over here. As our water tanks are roof mounted the incoming water temp can often be in excess of 30C and with ambient air temp generally around 24C inside (40C plus outside) this is an issue. Since flushing cooling water away is wasteful, expensi...
