Re: Lava Rock Require Maintenance

I use high heat to sterilize stainless and titanium tubes and some forms of glass (borosilicate)

and stainless scrubbies. if you use this method use the BBQ outside not the kitchen oven.

you can do a test with 1-2 pieces and a torch. I don't use lava rock.

If I have a ferment that is producing excessive “foam”, or Krausen in the case of a cereal grain ferment, I put a tube/hose in place of the airlock and route the hose into a jar of diluted chlorine solution. The blowoff usually dissolves in the jar and the CO2 expires back to the atmosphere, ie - N...

Re: 5 gal barrel who made it?

well I just contacted the seller I'm supposed to go pick it up tomorrow after work. I think I'm going to put some rye bread whiskey in it to start. I've got a third-generation rye bread in the fermenter right now and I've got about 6 gallons from two different stripping runs. Maybe when I do the sp...

were you getting them filled or trading them out at the big box store?

getting them filled should be less pricy. at $4.00/gal. I'd switch too.

Re: Hole on top of keg, is it usable?

took me a few tries to get this soldered on without leaks, but that was operator error. I soldered on one of these to my keg. Also got a bit to drill the hole here. The radius face solder flange needed a lot of cleaning. Also tossed the silicone gasket for PFTE. https://www.brewhardware.com/product...

Re: Hole on top of keg, is it usable?

Hey everyone! I bought the keg the other day thanks for all the help :D It seems to me the soldering solution though very convenient would only work with welding spuds. With the added inconvenience that I'd have to screw/unscrew a male thread cap when needed. If I wanted the more convenient and ele...

+1 ; Yummyrum safety is not a rant. I would like to add that much earlier in this thread it is instructed to sniff your concoction after adding acid. DO NOT just stick your nose in the jug and take a whiff. if you made some miscalculation you could permanently damage your nose. Use extreme caution a...

+1 what jonnys_spirit said. you could pour in a gallon at a time and measure the levels,

you will soon come up with an inch measurement for a gallon or multiples in your cylinder.

use a wood stick an be quick you will be accurate enough. it's called "sticking the tank"

Re: Heating wattage for 6 inch column

you talking about the kothe? if so the real question is what is it's maximum wattage rating?

this might help it's only 20 gal. you will have to do the math for 1250.

Example: To heat 20 gallons of water by 100°F in 30 mins (0.5 hrs); 3.1 x 20 x 100 / 0.5 = 12,400 Watts

I got EPDM gaskets. Looking at the supplier's chart, it looked like the correct one to get and was only a few dimes more than the other materials.
EPDM is not recommended in the vapor path, same with all other materials except PTFE, or flower paste.

Re: Leaking boiler

Geez Mr. Potatohead. The teflon tape, properly called “plumber’s tape” acts as a lubricant between the threads as you tighten the threaded joint. It is NOT a sealant. It is a lubricant allowing you to torque the fittings a little tighter. The pipe threads are tapered and naturally get tighter as yo...

no way to tell from a picture unless there is a picture of a 304-316 stamp in the metal.

who is the quote from? can you get the seller to test with a magnet? or source the mfg.

as to other materials. carbon steel, lined or unlined.

cheap and stainless don't generally go in the same sentence.

as for a seal you don't need perfection, just use 1-2-3 tight fitting copper disks and you will be good.
