Re: First Motorized Vehicle You Owned?

First bike was a BSA bantem 175cc, I think it was a late 50's model. First car was a 1957 Ford Customline 272 V8 3 speed auto.

Re: You know you are a Shiner when…

I meet the food distributer truck in the main street of my local town and transfer 200 kilos of sugar to my vehicle. Does that look a bit suspect?

Re: My New pot still

5 litres per hour is about what you should get on a stripping run with the heat turned up. I get 5 litres from a 2400w element and 2 L per H on spirit runs with a 1000w element.

Re: Who are the Aussies here?

I wouldn't bother with a controller, I have a 50 litre keg as my boiler I use a 2400w (taken from a kettle) to heat up and a 1000w hoop element for spirit runs, works great. I get 5 litres per hour using the 2400w for stripping and 2 litres per hour using the 1000w for spirit runs. Takes about 1 1/4...

Re: Beer Kegs

I use a keg for my worm condenser, I cut a hole about 8" diameter for my boiler and used the peice I cut out the condenser keg as the the boiler top. I didn't weld the the 2" pipe to the top, flour paste is all that is needed. You could easily build a still without weld/solder, the only we...

Re: What's the highest safe alcohol percentage to drink straight

About 6 months ago I had a tooth that needed pulling, one night I plucked up the courage to pull it myself, I took a swig of some 96%, swirled and swallowed it and extracted the tooth with a pair of plyers. I don't recommend drinking 96% but it certainly makes a great numbing/pain killing aid.

You could used a stainless or copper lined hot water system, plenty of distillers use them successfully.

Welcome IM.............got to watch that urge to build more than one alright, I built my first (20 litre pot still ) wasn't happy, built a bigger one (50 litre internal reflux) then converted it to an offset head/pot still model and I have another that is almost finished.

Re: Tell me what You think 4in. SS 100in

Great idea for insulation. I've just run it once, took almost 8hrs to get up to temp, but then ran off 4 gallons of low grade in about 5hrs. My heat source is 5 electric hot plates, its cheap and adjustable. After I add some packing I'll let you know how well it works. If it took 8 hours to get to ...

I broke my foot in oct 2008 and lost my job, I virtually sat on the lounge for 3 months watching DVD's and drinking sour mash. Now my foot is almost back to normal so I go deer shooting to keep myself entertained. Hard life but someone has to do it.

Re: temperature for potstill

I don't use a thermometer on my pot, I use an alco meter. I have a 50 litre pot and I strip about 5 litres per hour, comes of at about 130 proof, when I do spirit runs it comes off at 190 proof.

theholymackerel wrote:Thunder Road is a classic. (1958)

Robert Mitchum starred in it and also wrote it. The critics were surprised he could write such a quality screen play, but he was an insider from the area, so that helped alot with the authenticity.
I have just downloaded that one, probably watch it tonight.

Re: aussie yeast

I'll stick to Lowens, it's readily available, reliable, no off flavours and one pack lasts me all year ($3.75). I used a few turbos when I first started distilling but didn't like the disgusting off flavours they produce.
